Xicaru Silver 102

Xicaru Silver 102 is made with agave Espadin distilled in a copper alembic still. It is stronger the Xicaru Silver and has some slight flavor differences.

About this mezcal

Xicaru Silver 102 is made with agave Espadin by mezcalero Fernando Santibanez in Santiago Matatlan. Xicaru Silver 102° differs from Xicaru Silver in the way it is distilled. Fernando selects a smaller cut from the heart of the distillate, giving Xicaru Silver 102 a bolder, more robust flavor. This also gives it a higher ABV of 51%.

Xicaru Mezcal

Xicaru is the Zapotec word for beautiful. This name reflects mezcalero Fernando Santibañez’s desire to share his artistic creations. Using his grandmother’s recipe, Fernando makes small batches of Xicaru Mezcal at his palenque in Matatlán, Oaxaca. Its natural smoky flavor is derived by cooking the agave in a conical stone oven on mesquite and ocote, woods native to Oaxaca. The cooked agave is tahona mashed and naturally fermented in an open pine vat. Following fermentation, it is double distilled in a copper alembic, filtered and precisely blended. Fernando is extremely proud to be able share his family’s mezcal with you.

A good budget high proof. Not much aroma, very light smoke. A good explosion of flavor on the taste–a big burst of heat and cane sweetness to start it off. It goes down with plenty of pepper and sweet agave. The finish is fairly quick, and not overly alcoholy for 51%…but does give a nice belly warmth.

Rather pedestrian one for me though I admire the effort at 102 proof. I bought two bottles by mistake but it won’t be my worst one yet!

Well, I said in my review of the regular Xicaru Silver that perhaps a higher ABV would push the rating. So here we are.

Much more road tar and jackfruit on the nose this time. Taste is significantly sweeter, though not necessarily more complex, and the rubber smoke is more pronounced. I don’t find Xicaru’s smoke profile offensive as many of the reviewers here do – in fact, I dig it. But overall, it’s still a weirdly bland mezcal, even with the higher ABV.

Bottle #: 119/2186
Nose: Dusty. Stainless steel. A hint of vanilla. Decent amount of smoke.

Palate: Tastes quite industrial. Icing sugar sweet. High proof brings out a metallic, sour profile. Tons of smoke but more of the vehicle exhaust variety.

The mezcal liquid has a slight yellow color in the bottle but a lesser tinge of it in the glass – not terribly appetizing for a joven. Give this one a miss.

Bought for the description- for a heart cut of the distillation run. Very clean and sweet mouthfeel. No alcohol sting, just a nice alcohol bite, so no heads (puntas?) detected here as I can tell. I only drink straight so maybe a good one to cut into a drink or something.

Extra points to the brand for producing a higher-ABV mezcal.. it’s definitely better than their regular joven. Not much on the nose; on the palate there is soft vanilla with a chemical aftertaste. The flavor profile is clean like a blanco tequila. Might make a decent cocktail depending on the price. 2.5 stars
