Yola Mezcal

Yola Mezcal is produced using traditional methods in San Juan Del Rio. The flavors are bright and refreshing, yet complex with earthy mineral flavors.

About this mezcal

Yola Mezcal is handcrafted using a family recipe using agaves harvested on a family farm that was purchased in 1971. It is produced in San Juan Del Rio by Javier Bautista & Guadalupe Bautista using Maguey Espadin and Maguey Madrecuixe. The agaves are roasted in an earthen oven for 75 hours in the spring and summer, and 96 hours in the fall and winter. The cooked plants are crushed by tahona and then fermented in oak barrels with filtered spring water and captured rain water. The first distillation takes about 10 hours and the second is slower and takes about 15 hours. The copper pot made mezcal is distilled to proof and hand-bottled on site.

Note: Earlier batches with the label “Yola 1971 Mezcal” were made from 100% Espadin.

Yola Mezcal

Yola Mezcal is led by three women: La Clandestina Mezcaleria’s Yola Jimenez, chef and stylist Gina Correll Aglietti, and musician Lykke Li. Yola Mezcal is dedicated to traditional production methods and paying their workers in Mexico a fair wage. Yola Mezcal provides a place where the women of Oaxaca can have steady work; their bottling facility employs only women. In 1971, Jimenez’s grandfather bought a mezcal farm in San Juan del Río. Many years later, Yola Jimenez continues to plant all their own agave. She has also built a modern palenque that reduces water usage and log burning in mezcal production. Yola Mezcal strives to make mezcal as sustainable as possible, without compromising age-old traditions.

1971 – espadin/madrecuixe, 750mL. smoothest mezcal i’ve tried – hints of pepper and a strong finish with hints of vanilla. agree with other reviews here that the finish goes on and on… simple but incredibly complex. i recommend drinking it neat.

Missed the Lote details.
This one surprised me (in a good way). A bit smoker on taste, and with some stronger ethanol notes….slightly on the rough side for a sipper, but def. could drink in a pinch. Great for cocktails! Notes of roasted agave with a slightly vicious, creamy mouthfeel. Not overly complex but again surprisingly good given price point. 3.25 stars.
Review #181.

Pretty good entry level espadín. Aroma is good with plenty of roasted agave and light smoke. Taste is also good but a tad week and thin in the mouth. Finish is ok with some good heat and flavor but short. This is okay to sip, but probably better to mix in a drink. Pleasant, nothing offensive… But nothing outstanding. Good as an introduction to Mezcal.

Lote: 07 ABR
bottle says 1971 and it’s 100% a. angustifolia

Nose: medium earthy smoke, mineral, mint like with orange navel citrus notes

Taste: herbaceous like mint but with an oily finish, green pepper, notes of citrus and smoke interwoven between vegetal and mineral notes.
I let it sit on my tongue for a moment and tasted notes or vanilla and butterscotch.

Beautiful finish on the tongue. Taste lingers for a bit without needing to wash it away.

Love that this is women made and owned. It’s the reason I bought it. Not big on the celebrity link to the mezcal but it is a wonderful well balanced mezcal.

Lote No: 07 MAR
Nose: Orange citrus. Wild grass. Smells like an espadin outta smell.

Palate: An incredibly appealing smooth, slightly viscous texture. A very cool (no pun intended) orange creamsicle sweetness it. The finish – a sprinkle of Sichaun pepper (hot and numbing) and smoke – it has just the right amount of punch.

A rock solid espadin!

Simple espadin profile, there’s a light roast on the nose and some orange peel and mint. Palate is crisp – anise and some white pepper. Nice finish.

Excited to try this mezcal, but it was so, so weak. Low smoke, thin taste, reminiscent of simple syrup and egg. Even the label was just boring. Don’t drink this.

I drink a LOT of mezcal and this is the one I go back to again and again. It’s the one everyone loves because it’s so easy to drink and smooth. We love that it’s owned and operated by women. It’s truly an A+ mezcal for all time.

First a disclaimer. I am new to Mescal. But I adore this one. Has a nice rich butter scotch beginning to it and a very smooth mid-palate leading to finish that just goes on and on with plenty of fruit and smoke. (I counted to 30 and I still could taste it like a hauntingly complex music note fading into the distance). You never quite know when it’s really gone. Hedonistic! There is nothing not to like about it. I also like the fact that the entire operation is run by women. Yola and her crew making a single product. Simple and gorgeous. I haven’t tasted enough Mescal to say five stars, but it sure is good! Lot is listed as “07 November.”
