Lot YJ03-21 Bottle 0133/5100 48% tasted on 1/15/2024. Aroma’s out of the bottle are simple alcohol and some heat. Flavors are prickly and spicy with some sourness. Just not really working for me. I mean it’s okay their other bottles are much better.

48% abv, Lot: YJ08-22, Bottle: 1839/6000

Picked this up at Costco. I have had Yuu Baal before but am pretty impressed by the quality of this espadin even with high production numbers (6000 bottles in a batch sounds pretty industrial, but the bottle says its methods are artisanal). Really solid espadin: good heat, light smoke, citrus pith, grape jelly, and creamy mouthfeel. Great as a mixer and can’t beat the price under $35/bottle. Definitely agree with Zach’s evaluation, seems like older batches had some significant variation in quality though.

LOT#: YJ10-20 BOTTLE#: 1459
Nothing of note about this expression. Maybe it’s just this batch but I struggled to get any aroma out of it. It was crisp on the palate but felt more reminiscent of tequila rather than mezcal; subtle cooked agave on the palate with just a little heat.
I will probably revisit in the future but I was not a fan of this batch.

Lot: YJ28-21
Decent mezcal at a very reasonable price. Pleasant but indistinct smell. Taste is definitely dominated by the high ABV but is still surprisingly smooth.

Lot # YJ01-21
This was decent, definitely liked the higher proof. Smoke was a little more subtle, sweet agave flavor along with some banana.

I found this mezcal a bit dominated by its 48% ABV, and very hot on both the nose and palate. It does smooth out and offer nice floral and citrus notes. A real bargain to boot. BATCH YJ09-18 BOTTLE 4468/6890.

Batch:YJ16-18, Bottle:884/3840
This one has a lot of funk on the nose at first, with lots of sharp briny cheese, and even bit of rotten agave. Given time to breathe, the aroma softens and sweeter scents appear including sweet pickled cherry peppers, and a hint of smoked pineapple. There’s also a note of agave syrup, as well as a dusting of white pepper, and some rock salt. The flavor is sweet and spicy with some dry minerality. The sweetness fades rather quickly with faint licorice and citrus evaporating from the palate while cayenne lingers. The body is a bit thin, even watery. The finish is all wet slate but for a whisp of smoke from the charred agave.

Nothing extraordinary. Basic mezcal flavors. In blind taste test it had a briney almost meaty flavor in comparison to others. Ok for sipping, and cheap price make it an OK bottle to have around, but I always find myself reaching for another bottle instead.

For me this is a no brainer. Aromatic but packs a fiery punch. Decent amount of smoke but it does not obscure the nuance and balance. Some citrus, some banana, dried fruit. There’s a small tire fire in this bottle and I mean that in a good way. Easily procured and fairly priced.

Lot #: YJ10-20 (Bottle: 2417/5100)
Nose: Walnut. Some cheesy funk. Swampy and smoky.

Palate: Powered sugar. A little creamy. Caramel. Nice bit of smoke. Slight ethanol heat. Cigar aftertaste.

I really like this espadin – it’s sweeter than most. The price is right too!

Batch YJ02-19. San Juan del Rio. Mezcalero: Isaias Martinez Juan. 48%. Had it at home. Light fresh flavor. Easy drinking, mild sharpness. A green agave flavor arrives subtly after a few sips. A sweet caramel roastiness comes later. Seems like the initial alcohol blast numbs up the mouth and the other flavors come out.

Overall solid mezcal. Great for sipping neat or mixing cocktails (the good price point allows for this). Sweet on nose with notes of melon and lemon grass. Good, smoky finish. Buttery notes throughout. Batch: YJ01-19, Bottle 4418.

Alcoholy bite on the palette. Smoke is overwhelmed by that taste. Lacks sweetness or richness. Tastes more similar to a tequila. There are definitely better sipping mezcals in this price range. Not good.

Batch YJ01-19 … Aromas of a light mint and eucalyptus; flavors of citrus, banana and mint with a long zesty finish. I enjoyed this neat and the price makes it a candidate for cocktails. < $40 usd

for price and versatility in pretty much any mezcal drink. it’s costco’s best kept secret, and for the lowest price i’ve seen. it’s a higher proof workhorse.

try it in an el camino, with a rye whisky, you manhattan fans will be blown away. can have an edge sipped neat – as rakhal reports with the bitter and isopropyl notes – but after oxidizing, opens up to be a bit more sweet and having pollen notes on palate. i actually didnt like most of the first bottle i bought, and was only until a month or two later revisiting that i wondered what happened. im on the 5-6th bottle

Lot YJ05-17. I found this pretty unpleasant. Rubbing alcohol. White sugar, bitter gourd, lemon pith, sunflower seeds. Sour, bitter, and chemical.

My first mezcal was this one. At first, I was overwhelmed by the burnt tire smokey character, but these days I realize how good that character is and how hard it it to find quite as prominent in an affordable bottle. Solid.

Batch YJ08-18 One of the better affordable bottles I’ve picked up. I see myself grabbing another one of these once it’s gone. Cooked fruit and a slight sweetness that goes along with it. Grabbed this after seeing it was by one of the mezcaleros from Marca Negra.

Batch YJ13-18 I’ve had two bottles of this Mezcal before and loved it. This batch is just way off. The nose has really strong, unpleasant vomit notes that waft far from the glass. On the palate it it’s not bad, the main note I was getting was egg nog, but it’s not nearly as smoky as previous bottles I’ve had. And the smell is so off putting I had to immediately wash out the glass so I could stop smelling it.

Light banana and bubble gum aromas with just a hint of smoke.
Packs heat on the palate, this needs to breathe a bit, and ends on a slightly petroleum note
