La Venenosa Raicilla Costa

Nov 20, 2021

Lot 320 /02-21/47.4%

Earthy, fresh funk that is pleasant and inviting. I enjoy this one quite more often than the rest of the Venenosa expressions and find this to be a great offering as an introduction to Raicilla

La Venenosa Raicilla Sierra del Tigre

Nov 20, 2021

This was funkkkk and I liked it. It had a cheese salt popcorn characteristic about it that makes it very intriguing to me. I like weird, this is weird.

La Venenosa Sierra Volcanes

Nov 20, 2021

I would like to try this one again on its own and reassess, the other offerings I tried in the Venenosa flight were just a bit more funky and exciting and in line with what I was looking for, this was underwhelming. I will try again and update my review.

5 Sentidos Sierra Negra

Nov 20, 2021

Batch SNALB0120 / 51.96% / Btl 96/228

I’m a believer in Sierra Negra and this is my new standard for this agave. I would order any batch of the 5S Sierra Negra based on how much I enjoyed this pour. Incredible job!

Mezcalero Special Bottling No. 5

Nov 20, 2021

This one was funky-fresh and I was definitely into it. This was my introduction to Cenizo as a singular varietal and it has propelled me into trying more offerings from Durango.

Mezcalero No. 22

Nov 20, 2021

I have nothing major to add from what’s already been said. Beautiful expression and one I will try every chance I get. Still one of my absolute favorites out of the Mezcalero line.

Mezcalero No. 25

Nov 20, 2021

I really enjoy this bottling and although I do not usually lean towards Tobala, this is a fantastic expression of the varietal, so much so I went and bought a bottle after trying it. I like the comment above about Banana Runts and would agree that was something I picked up on as well. Overall very tropical and fresh and just a stellar pour.

Real Minero Tripon

Nov 20, 2021

Batch RMTR-01 / 2016 / Don Lorenzo

Wow what a treat, so thankful I was able to try this amazing expression from the master Don Lorenzo. With the rarity and limited availability of the Tripon varietal mostly to SCM, it’s no wonder that this offering from Real Minero is top-notch. Highly recommend you try it if you find it!

Del Maguey Pechuga

Nov 20, 2021

I am by no means an expert on Pechuga but this is still my favorite I’ve ever tried. It is such a complex pour that has all of the qualities I love in a craft distillate. I won’t try to describe the flavor profile as I think the description above is quite spot on. It’s incredibly balanced and so masterfully crafted, I highly recommend it.

La Venenosa Etnica Tutsi Maguey Mai

Nov 20, 2021

Unlike anything I’ve tried, highly recommend you try it if you can find it. Earthy nose, fruity palate, thin mouthful and lingering aftertaste of menthol. Very good stuff!

Leyendas Cementerio Mezcalero

Nov 20, 2021

Wow again! Absolutely phenomenal expression from Leyendas. This one didn’t quite have the presence of the other expressions I tried in my flight but I will certainly say this one seemed the most refined and subtle. I can see why this is a special occasion mezcal just based on the length of glass-aging – I hate to say it but it was smooth in texture and flavor.

Leyendas Reservas de la Biosfera

Nov 20, 2021

Very good elixir! A close second to the Don Anastacio for me. I learned that no matter what expression it is from Leyendas, I should try it if I find it.

Leyendas Mezcales Únicos

Nov 20, 2021

How could I not rate this bottle 5 stars. It was not my favorite expression from Leyendas of the night but with such a cool story and rarity behind the Montana agave, it’s a bottle that is worth a try if you find it.

Leyendas Grandes Leyendas

Nov 20, 2021

I did a tasting with a few very neat Leyendas bottles at Las Perlas in Austin and this expression from Don Anastacio was my favorite of the lineup. The final product is a craft of a person with more than half a century of time perfecting his product, and it truly shows. It was so refined and had such a strong presence on that lineup. Everytime I took a sip of one of the other bottles, I immediately wanted to come back to this one. Phenomenal, would love to find a bottle of this.

Vago Tobala – Joel Barriga

Nov 20, 2021

LOTJ-01-TOB-20 /51.2%

This Texas-only release is quite fantastic, I think Joel Barriga crafted an excellent elixir from Tobala in a very similar fashion to his Espadin.

Vago Mexicano – Aquilino

Nov 20, 2021

LOT A-06-M-19 / 51.4%

Aquilino was an absolute master of his craft and this expression shows no different. It has changed dramatically over the life of the bottle being opened transforming from densely earthy and spicy to floral and sweet, I really enjoy this stuff.

Del Maguey Chichicapa

Nov 20, 2021

I can’t remember how many times I’ve had Chichicapa. It’s a good pour for a good price that is usually easy to locate. Also a very good expression for individuals looking to get into the world of agave distillates.

Vago Tepeztate – Aquilino Garcia Lopez

Nov 20, 2021

LOT A-09-TE-19 (Bottled exclusively for The Austin Shaker) / 50.7%

I have nothing further to add to @theagavefairy description of this expression. It’s quite phenomenal, one of my favorite “mezcal’s” ever.

Real Minero Largo

Nov 20, 2021

Batch DRML-14 / Harvest 2019 / Btl No (USA) 88/193

I love this incredible Karwinskii expression from Edgar just as much as his father’s expressions of this agave. This liquid stands out to me with great minerality, stone fruit, white pepper and a lightly pleasant funk, it is so intriguing. Real Minero Largo is a standard for SCM in my opinion.

Del Maguey Boca del Cerro

Nov 20, 2021

This is not a fair review. This was tasted after MANY pours that night and I was not able to try it side-by-side with standard Chichicapa. My initial reaction was it seemed alot like regular chichi which is not a bad thing and the story behind the agave is very interesting.
