Vago Elote – Hijos de Aquilino Garcia

Oct 10, 2021

LOT A2-13-EL-20 from November 2020.
1027 liters.

Aroma: lightly roasted corn on the cob, unsalted butter, acetone, cilantro, mineral, citrus

Flavor: green peppercorn, lime, sweet but packs a punch. high minerality but I get a touch of floral flavors.

I feel similarly to aarild about maybe needs to rest a bit. Extended taste. A bit oily on the tongue. The corn helps balance out this roasted espadin and gives it an umami quality to it

Nose: super bright botanical scent. Immediately, I’m getting juniper and star anise. It’s a permeating smell. I poured 1oz and sit it on my bedside table and could smell it from the other side of my queen bed. Second smell I get the note of coriander, fennel seed, and nutmeg. The mezcal is underneath the botanicals, as it is the base. I get a vegetal smell, like a green pepper or mint. It’s obviously very herbaceous. Smells sweet.

Taste: I can definitely see how this could be a sipping gin. I’ve never sipped gin before, as I’ve only used it in some cocktails. I find this very pleasant. The 45% hits your tongue in a pleasant wave as you savor the botanicals with the espadín base. I find it to be overwhelmingly juniper forward but with some spice and citrus underneath to help balance it out.

My go to gin cocktails are an aviation and a gimlet, I think this would excel there. I’ve never had a Negroni but I’d be interested to try one traditional style and one with this pierde almas +9 botanicals to be able to compare/contrast. Very delicious as a sipping gin though. I could see this being used as an aperitif or digestif truly. Depends on the meal.

I bought this because I was so intrigued by a gin and mezcal combo and for the $80 USD I paid, I feel that it was worth it.

Nose: dried fruits like pineapple or mango. Green pepper. tropical with notes of natural leather and a touch of acetone.

Taste: it hits your tongue like an explosion. very bold flavor. I definitely get a taste of tropical fruit like pineapple or mango but it is fleeting or overpowered by a smoky punch with an acetone finish. When it first glazes over my tongue I almost feel like it has a leather quality to its viscosity. Lots of leather and spice in flavor. It’s reminiscent of whisky…or the idea of whisky that’s aged in barrels. Has a certain level of spice to it and it lingers on your tongue long after you’ve swallowed.

Nose: definitely yes to tennis ball aromas. aloe vera. grassy. smells sweet. lime yes that’s the citrus smell. the idea of Tamarind big not quite.

Taste: silky mouthfeel. Enters your mouth with flavors of mesquite and light smoke, has a mineral punch. Undertone flavors of cardamom or white pepper and cloves. definitely notes of lemongrass hence the grassy citrus smell I mentioned earlier. it lingers and packs a punch but in a delicate delightful way. it tastes a little bit like salty or savory. it has the same impact of tamarind does to me. sour and sweet, something about contrasting flavors that just work well. you really get to taste the landscape of the highlands.

Series 5, July 2019
220 liters

Nose: mesquite like a kettle cooked bbq chip. Memphis bbq. Kind of like an ancho chile pepper. Earthy. Touch of lemon.

Taste: definitely tastes like a nice little barbecue. I imagine this would go great with a carne asada. Definitely hits your tongue and throat but in a good way. Extended finish. Almost like a smoker cooked the agave it has such a soft subtle warmth to its bbq flavors.

Overall very enjoyable! I bought this because it’s made by a female distiller.

Nose: definitely get notes of banana and natural cocoa bean or dark chocolate upon the first sniff. I get a mineral in the background. I also get a hint of freshly cut wood, something akin to pine, and citrus in the second whiff.

Taste: wow what an explosion of flavor in your mouth! It definitely packs a punch at 55% but with such complex flavor. The banana flavor comes through as a banana that is just about to ripen enough for it to be sweet. Really wonderfully complex mezcal.

Lote: 07 ABR
bottle says 1971 and it’s 100% a. angustifolia

Nose: medium earthy smoke, mineral, mint like with orange navel citrus notes

Taste: herbaceous like mint but with an oily finish, green pepper, notes of citrus and smoke interwoven between vegetal and mineral notes.
I let it sit on my tongue for a moment and tasted notes or vanilla and butterscotch.

Beautiful finish on the tongue. Taste lingers for a bit without needing to wash it away.

Love that this is women made and owned. It’s the reason I bought it. Not big on the celebrity link to the mezcal but it is a wonderful well balanced mezcal.

Nose: vegetal, lightly cooked agave, citrus/bright

Taste: light acetone, rich vegetal flavor like a pepper…definitely herbal with notes of mineral and earth. Not so much smoke. Definitely a bright mezcal.

Feel: soft, kind of watery viscosity. Maybe even a little salty feeling.

Overall great flavor and at a great price point. I bought this to expand my collection so I would have a cupreata.
