5 Sentidos Ensamble de 6 Magueyes

May 16, 2020

Batch EN6M-19. Smells very vegetative. Lots of green veggies and minerals on the nose. The palate is fruity but mellow and subtle. Very solid. It’s sweet and light and breezy. Easily approachable.

Tio Pesca Coyote

May 16, 2020

Batch TPCO. Bottle 307/353. Very light nose. Aromas of smoke and salinity and minerals. The palate has a touch of shellfish, smoke, and a bit of sour green fruit. Seems light and a bit watery. Not my jam.

Siete Misterios Coyote

May 16, 2020

Lot CYT05 from 2015. Bottle 89/758. 46.3%. Smells incredible: cinnamon, all spice, orange peel, and brown sugar. Palate is rich with spicy celery. The celery flavor lingers. Touches of maple as well.

Yoowe Bacanora

May 16, 2020

43.5% Lot 4 from July 2019. Spicy nose with a bit of sour funk. A little cheesy aroma mixing with peppercorns and jalapeño. Palate has mint, jalapeño, peppermint, and a bit of cream. I dig this.

Maguey Melate Barril – Antonio Martinez

May 13, 2020

Agreed with Rakhal. This is karwinskii perfection. Aromas of baked goods, chocolate dipped strawberries, sugary ice cream, spearmint, and bit of musk. The palate is big and round. Notes of vanilla, dried banana, strawberries, mesquite, and charred wood. Really awesome.

Maguey Melate Tobaziche – Felix Angeles Arellanes

May 13, 2020

Lot 2. A perennial favorite. Such sweet, rich aromas of honey, coffee cake, candied pecans, and waffles smothered in maple syrup. It smells like a big sweet breakfast on a cold morning as a kid. The palate is earthy like new rope and fresh leather. More notes of toast, licorice, and slight hint of molasses. This Tobaziche from Don Felix is really him at his best.

5 Sentidos Blanco

May 8, 2020

Light, grassy nose. A few wild flowers for aromas well. The palate sits as heavy as a leather jacket. It lingers and really holds it’s place in your mouth. More notes of grass and wildflowers, brown paper bags, burlap, barnyard, and some dark fruit like papaya. Really mellow and brooding.

Rezpiral Espadin – Berta Vasquez

May 5, 2020

Series 3. Smells incredibly fresh and bright. Aromas of lemon, pine, spearmint, and anise. BIG on the palate. Notes of oranges, banana, grapefruit, vanilla bean, broccoli, and pine. Lots of new car tastes and smells.

Mal Bien Bicuixe

May 3, 2020

03/19 batch. Aromas of salt, chalky minerals, and a newly printed newspaper. Some lavender aromas as well. The palate has notes of dark chocolate, chocolate covered cherries, sea salt, and caramel. Really nice.

Mal Bien Jabali

May 3, 2020

04/18 batch. Complex nose. Aromas of cloves, allspice, dry grass, and hay. Anise and butterscotch flavors right up front. They hit the back of the palate as well with some toasted fennel, butter, and brown sugar. This is a really interesting Jabali. It’s very different from most of the Jabali I’ve tried in the past.

Rezpiral Tequilana – Reina Sanchez

May 1, 2020

WOW! That nose! This thing smells incredible. Tons of big fruity aromas: pineapple, pink lemonade, Bubble Tape bubblegum (original flavor), sweet raspberry jam, and tangerines. The palate is less bodacious, but still really nice. Sweet flavors of grilled pineapple, orange creamsicle, and a bit of tree fruit like peaches or apricots. Really really enjoyable mezcal.

Dos Hombres Espadin

Apr 30, 2020

I realize it’s cooler to hate celebrity mezcals than it is to NOT hate them. But I don’t hate this at all. I’ve had a ton of stuff from the producer, Gregorio Valasco, through Piedre Almas and other brands, and he makes solid mezcal. Yes, this Dos Hombres is a little lighter, with lower ABV than I typically look for in a sipper, but it’s got some character. It’s floral on the nose with hints of lemon and lavendar aromas. The palate, as mentioned, is light, but it’s got hints of vanilla and brown sugar. There’s a celebrity price tag on the shelf for this, which is unfortunate, but I suppose all those great Aaron Paul and Bryan Cranston Instagram pics won’t pay for themselves 😉

Don Mateo Cupreata

Apr 27, 2020

Lot 20 from 2015. Bottle 108/696. Big and fruity. High notes of grapefruit and fresh berries. A bit of pepper and little pine and cut herbs. Really enjoyable.

Apaluz Joven

Apr 25, 2020

Lot APAJ003. From 10/2018. Really nice for the price. A bit cheesy and funky in a very Durango way. Hints of sharp cheddar, cream cheese, and some slight meat/hide flavor. The meatiness is there, but it’s mild. Light finish. The low ABV makes this really accessible and a good place to start if you’ve never had mezcal from Durango.

Alipus San Juan XX Aniversario – Joel Antonio Cruz

Apr 19, 2020

Lot AE-XXSJA. Bottle 138/254. Awesome all around. Aromas of fresh fruit and spicy peppers. This has a really nice sweet & spicy element to it. The nose is full of jalapeno peppers, sweet cream, and strawberries. The palate has notes of vanilla, caramel, orange creamsicles, peaches, and strawberry candies. Really enjoying this.

Alipus Santa Ana XX Aniversario

Apr 19, 2020

Lot AE0XXSRH. Bottle 067/416. A bit peppery on the nose. Lots of Tepextate and Espadin coming through in the aromas: green peppers, aloe, fresh parsley, and cilantro. Also aromas of gun powder and chalky minerals, like hunting on a dry riverbed. The palate is surprisingly soft, and bit buttery. It’s a little hot, but very floral. Note of lavender, coconut, barbershop smells, rose pedals, and fresh flowery breeze.

Sotomayor Ensamble

Apr 19, 2020

Lot 005. Vegetal and herbaceous. Aromas of dry hay, fresh coffee, green tea, and dried spearmint. The palate is sweet with hints of chocolate mint, vanilla bean, caramel, and little bit of clove. This is really nice and balanced. It’s very light and fresh, easy to drink, but still with considerable character.

5 Sentidos Bicuixe

Apr 17, 2020

Lots of minerals on the nose. Hints of lemon, chalk, flan, and new car smell. The palate is balanced, full of dark fruit, and lingers. Notes of plums, dates, figs, dried dark fruit, dried mango, dried papaya, and a splash of spearmint.

Mezcalero Special Bottling No. 5

Apr 5, 2020

Highly viscous. This really hangs on the glass. Aromas of cream cheese, sweet cream, red fruit like cranberries and strawberries, and salty sea breeze. The palate is delicate with a fine finesse. Tasting notes of raw hides, dried cranberries, and Maine sea salt. There’s a cold-ocean vibe about this, where you can almost feel the cold breezy air and icy water and frozen sand on your toes, the saltiness all around. Really nice.

Lagrimas de Dolores Sierreño

Mar 5, 2020

Lot 1-W. Bottle 34. Aromas open up considerably in the glass. A bit hot on the nose with aromas of lead, slate, creosote, iodone, and gun powder. Also some sweet vanilla and Rambutan fruit aromas as well. The palate is super peppery. Flavors of freshly ground black peppercorns, jalapeno spice, and raw chalky minerals. There’s a floral, aromatic quality to this that is nice. Slightly men’s-cologne or aftershave in character. Hot but enjoyable.
