Reyes y Cobardes Cupreata

Aug 13, 2017

Batch 16. Very sweet and buttery aromas. This is really good for the price and it’s my favorite of the Reyes y Cobardes that are currently available. Great for sipping and for mixing. Very enjoyable. Light notes of fresh fruit and cut limes. Soft and approachable on the palate.

Reyes y Cobardes Duragensis

Aug 13, 2017

Batch 14. Slight sour and cheesy aromas. More aromas of wild apples and wild brown rice. This is very light on the palate and easy to drink. It’s almost wispy or feathery in character. It’s easily accessible and a bit funky. Great deal at this price if you want something wet and funky.

Sacrificio Reposado

Aug 9, 2017

Lot MSR-008. Very floral for a reposado. Doesn’t quite taste like a typical reposado as it’s much brighter and vibrant. The reposado from most other mezcal companies is done in charred barrels, and I think the uncharred element of the Sacrificio aging really makes a key difference. This is a very unique reposado. I like this 100 times more than the Sacrificio Joven. This is good for cocktails and sipping.

Reyes y Cobardes Salmiana

Aug 9, 2017

Batch 07. Piney aromas. Nicely adjusted notes across the palate. There’s a bit of funk with notes of blue cheese, goat, and potatoes. This is a direct meat and cheese mezcal. Straight-forward and clean. Great deal for the price if you want something light and funky.

El Jolgorio Tobaziche

Aug 9, 2017

The nose on this thing is a bit crazy. It has some grassy vegetal aromas and notes of lemon zest, orange fruit, and fresh flowers. Very perfumed nose. The palate is balanced and complete. Great mezcal!

Mezcalero Special Bottling No. 3

Aug 9, 2017

Very light aromas of bananas, vanilla bean, and dark ripe peach. The palate is even and balanced with a light finish. There’s a lot of finesse to this. It’s muy suave. The Tobala is mellow. The flavor doesn’t blow me away but there’s an umami intangible that is really intriguing. I’ve had several Mezcals from this Mezcalero and this is my favorite of his thus far.

Mezcalero No. 18

Aug 9, 2017

A bit spiny with aromas of pollen, lavender, orange, and nail polish. The palate is very buttery. Notes of buttered popcorn, asparagus, and sweet potatoes. I like this one a lot. Very nice with a bit of heat but it doesn’t overpower. Lots of complexity.

Mezcalero No. 8

Aug 9, 2017

Wow! The nose of this is very floral and sweet. Given the blend of agave, the flavor surprised me. It’s a bit peppery. I don’t get a ton of vegetal notes, but more minerality. This is buttery with notes of caramel, green pepper, and root vegetables. Super complex.

Sacrificio Joven

Aug 9, 2017

Fresh citrus notes on the nose. It smells strong and full-bodied for 40% ABV. It smells great! This mezcal is hot on the palate though. It’s sharp and fiery. Lots of pepper makes some of the fruity notes seem muddy and unclear. Perhaps this would be better in a cocktail as it didn’t make for a great sipper.

GEM&BOLT Mezcal + Damiana

Aug 9, 2017

It’s infused with Damiana, which makes it pretty unique. I know some people who really love this stuff and there is a bit of a whimsical spirit that dances faintly over the palate. I’m not sure if that’s from the the herbal infusion or if it’s from something else in the process. Given the Damiana infusion, this mezcal is worth trying.

El Buho Mezcal

Aug 7, 2017

I’ve had this numerous times and it’s never disappointed me. They have consistently good Espadin for both mixing and sipping straight. It has light smoke and a fruit-forward approach that makes this really nice for mezcal palomas. I like it straight as well because it’s full flavor and doesn’t give up through the taste. Overall this is a thumbs up!

El Jolgorio Coyote

Edition 1. Bottle 6/120. The nose of this mezcal is exquisite. Deep, complex aromas fill the air around this mezcal. I find myself walking up to my mezcal shelf randomly throughout the day just to uncork and smell this delicious mezcal. It’s truly intoxicating! The nose has rich aromas of fresh peaches, limes, and cream. It almost reminds me of smelling a freshly made key lime pie. It’s equally as enchanting on the palate, with a full blend of creamy oranges, mangos, and freshly cut green vegetables. It’s wild and lively, bouncing all over the taste buds. I don’t give out 5-star reviews often, but this mezcal is absolutely incredible!

Mezcalosfera Espadin con Cacao – Margarito Cortés

Jul 29, 2017

Tons of rich, dark chocolate aromas with hints of bright tangerine and melon. This mezcal is very sweet on the palate with notes of dark chocolate and orange peel. This tastes more like a fine desert than it does a mezcal. Mousse and deep chocolate layers in this! Very tasty!

Rey Campero Espadin + Pulquero

Jul 22, 2017

The bottle says this was produced in October 2014. Lot DS001-OB. Bottle 336/662. There are some really nice lemon and zesty, bright fruit aromas that awaken the senses for each sip. The palate has hints of orange peel and ash. I don’t get a ton of clay notes from the unique distillation, which is actually nice as there’s not much to mask the taste of the agave Salmiana.

Mezcalosfera con Mango y Chile Habanero – Margarito Cortés

Jul 21, 2017

VERY interesting! Highly recommend trying this! The nose has hints of mango and ripe dark fruit. The palate is fruit-forward with a bit of habanero heat and a long finish that resembles a caramel glaze that could be found on a cooked pork shoulder or ham. This leaves the mouth with a slight tingling that I’ve never experienced before. Really like this!

Del Maguey Santo Domingo Albarradas

Jul 20, 2017

Lot SDA-144. Aromas of apples and hard mangos. This is really nice. Fresh fruity notes on the palate. Some Del Maguey Mezcals really match the art on the bottles and this one is one of them! It’s wild and free like birds flying over the village. This is tasty and easy to drink.

Tosba Espadin

Jul 20, 2017

Lot 005. Light and fruity aromas. Notes of charred fruit. I’m a big fan of this. It’s a really nice, light Espadin. Very easy to drink!

Donaji Añejo

Jul 12, 2017

Lot DJAN/0116. Lots of wood aromas. This is really sweet with notes of caramel and vanilla. Not much agave taste in this as the barrel aging masks most of it.

Pierde Almas Mezcal de Conejo

Jul 12, 2017

Lot: 03-PC from 2012. 49.3% ABV. Wow! Strong anise aromas and flavor….like really strong anise. If you don’t like black liquorice, you won’t like this. If you can find a cheap pour of this, it’s worth trying. It’s made from rabbit! It’s tough to taste the rabbit but I trust it’s in there somewhere. I mostly just get a lot of anise from this. Overall, if I disregard price, this is three stars.

El Buho Especial Tepeztate

Jul 12, 2017

Lot 001/TPX. Smells awesome! Lots of aromas of fresh green peppers and asparagus. This is sugary and sweet with notes of cooked Agave and freshly ground pepper. The flavor is a bit thin, but delicious. It’s worth having one of these around the house.
