Chango Loco Rosa Pechuga

Feb 15, 2017

Lot 101. Bottle 42/329. A bit sour on the nose with aromas of wild apples and bubble gum. The flavor has strong anise with some notes of pepper, clementine, and more bubble gum. I’m a big fan of Pechugas, and this one is highly enjoyable.

Del Maguey Wild Tepextate

Feb 15, 2017

Lot TEP15-1. This mezcal smells amazing. Aromas of toasted corn, burnt orange peel, and sweet onion. This walks the line. It’s even and balanced. I’m a big fan of Tepeztate and this one is fantastic.

El Jolgorio Barril

Feb 15, 2017

Edition 04 from 2014. Bottle 583/1640 from Ignacio Parada. Strong aromas of butter, peppercorn, and charred cinnamon. There’s a bit of heat on this mezcal that isn’t really typical of the other El Jolgorio. The flavor is still complex, but there’s a bite to this that isn’t present in their other releases. Flavor notes include cinnamon, blood orange, and baked vanilla bean.If this were $90, it would get 4 stars, but it’s not $90. Given the price, this is only 3 stars.

Real Minero Espadin, Largo, Tripon, Barril

Feb 15, 2017

Lot 1 from 2004. Bottle #162/781. Very warm and buttery on the nose with aromas of green apple, nutmeg, and a touch of wet grass. Though this mezcal is distilled in clay pots, there’s little-to-no clay aromas or flavor notes. The flavor is well balanced and clean with subtle notes of green pepper, fresh cut grass, and ground pepper. This bottle gets a lot of hype and it’s worth the hype. If you see this bottle, it’s definitely worth trying.

Marca Negra Tobala

Feb 15, 2017

Lot MJ08-14 bottle 927/1200 at 52% ABV. This is SUPER aromatic. The smell is really amazing and unique. The nose has notes of fresh banana, lime peel, tangerine, and vanilla bean. It’s a hot Tobala, much hotter than 99% of the other Tobala I’ve tried. The only Tobala that is close to this one in heat is the Mezcal Vago Tobala. Even with the heat on this, however, there’s a lot of character that shines through. It has notes of pine, orange cream, and charred plantains. The mouthfeel is full and rich. Overall, this is great stuff.

Clase Azul Durango

Feb 10, 2017

Didn’t get to catch the lot number on this one. I ordered it at a Mexican restaurant that also carried Mestizo, and considering the cost, I wish I had ordered the Mestizo. It’s enjoyable, but for the $200+ price tag for a bottle, it’s not worth it. This is way over-priced, and I imagine most of the cost goes toward the fancy bottle. There are way better mezcals to be ordered. This one is way too expensive and not good enough to warrant the cost.

La Venenosa Raicilla Sierra

Feb 8, 2017

Lote 12 Fecha 05-15 Bottle 110/800. This is one of my favorite raicillas. It reminds me of a Georgia O’Keefe painting.

Marca Negra Arroqueno

Feb 8, 2017

Lot MJ20-15 Bottle 234/600. Very clean with notes of fruit on the nose. The flavor is super bright and vibrant, much like the other bottles (Dobadan and Ensamble) that Don Beto makes for Marco Negra. Flavor notes include plantains, orange pulp, and sweet potatoes. These flavors blend nicely into a very balanced experience through the taste. The mouthfeel is medium-viscous that seems to bounce around to different receptors in the mouth. This is an incredible mezcal.

Fidencio Clasico

Feb 8, 2017

Lot C416. For big-batch mezcal, this is very good. This particular batch had 9,000 bottles in it, which is a ton! But the flavor is still fully intact and the quality doesn’t seem jeopardized in any way. The nose has aromas of vanilla and caramel. The taste is smooth with a bit of heat and a thick mouthfeel. This mezcal is very sweet but not fruity. It has tasting notes of honey, brown sugar, and a bit of sweet bell pepper.

Vago Mexicano – Aquilino

Feb 5, 2017

The 90/10 Mexicano/Espadin blend of this mezcal from October 2014 is some of the best mezcal I’ve ever had. It’s hot with some notes of lemon, pepper, and wildflowers. This Oct 2014 release is an easy 5-star. The 100% Mexicano from January 2016 is more of a 4 star mezcal. It’s still great. I don’t use the 4 star review lightly. At 52.1% ABV, this is quite laidback and relaxed. I’d like to try some of the other straight Mexicano releases that Aquilino has made to compare this one. For me, the 90/10 blend is a bit more complex and has more bite. Both lots are great and worth trying.

Mayalen Borrego

Feb 5, 2017

Lot CP00714 which was bottled in 2013. Reviewing this is tough as it’s so different from everything else I’ve tasted. It starts out sweet with notes of honey and vanilla, and then moves into notes of pepper, nutmeg, and cardamom. It’s almost tangy in it’s approach and finish, which is very different from other mezcals. Given this is a pechuga made with agave Cupreata, it’s pretty unique in character. It’s definitely worth trying.

Los Nahuales Special Edition No. 1

Feb 5, 2017

Very good and complex. The nose has subtle notes of fresh green pepper and cantaloupe. Tasting notes include fresh ground black pepper, orange spice, and cayenne pepper. I get more agave Americano than Cuishe on this. It’s complex and (dare I say) suave. For it’s complexity, this is incredibly easy to drink.

Donaji Ensamble

Feb 5, 2017

Lot DJEN/0116 from 2016. This was a somewhat blind purchase at the liquor store. I’d never seen this brand before, but it was reasonably priced, so I gave it a shot. The bottles are not fully labeled with mezcalero and location information, so I didn’t really know what I was purchasing. Overall, considering the cost, I think this is a great buy. The nose is a little funky with hints of fresh lime peel. The mouthfeel is medium light. The tasting notes include cooked orange, damp earth, anise, and cashew fruit. The finish lingers on the tongue, but is pleasant.

Amaras Espadin

Feb 5, 2017

Lot 1-1183/3300 from 2014 by Laajsh Doob in San Juan del Rio. Very clean on the noes with aromatic notes of chestnuts and caramel. The taste is floral and fruity with heavy notes of orange and pineapple. This is very feminine and perfumed, vibrant and bright with a balanced mouthfeel.

Mezcal Meteoro

Jan 28, 2017

This is a good Espadin. Meteoro is the same NOM as Marca Negra mezcal, so it’s definitely in good company. It’s interesting that this is marketed so heavily as a mixer as it’s 45% ABV. I’ve never had it in a cocktail, and I’m sure it would be fine for that purpose, but it also makes for a good sipper. Very soft and balanced. Lot: PCF03-1401.

Mezcalero No. 11

Jan 28, 2017

Like other Don Beto mezcals, this is very clean on the nose. The flavor is incredibly dynamic and well-defined. Tasting notes include fresh green pepper, caramel, vanilla, and papaya. Though this ensemble has a lot of different agave blended into it, the flavors all work well together and create a fantastic experience.

Pierde Almas Dobadaan

Jan 28, 2017

Lot 18-D. Aromas of vanilla, leather, and bit of pepper. Complex flavor that is very rich with notes of fresh cherry, cream, and blood orange. This is a very good Mexicano.

Mezcalero No. 14

Jan 26, 2017

Lots of clay on the nose. The clay really overpowers this one. It’s very colloidal in mouthfeel, like running your hand over wet clay. It’s good on it’s own, but considering this is a Mezcalero and Arroqueno, I would expect a bit more. Don’t get me wrong, this is a good mezcal. I just have high expectation out of what this brand releases.

Mezcalero Special Bottling No. 2

Jan 26, 2017

Wow! You really can’t get enough of this mezcal. Even after a night of tasting other amazing mezcals, this one tastes incredible. Very sweet and sugary on the nose. Aromas of fresh sugar cane, pine, and vibrant fresh green pepper. Smells like bubble gum! Everything about this mezcal is very clean. The flavor is unbelievably complex. It’s so complex that it’s hard to pin individual notes. There’s some vanilla, leather, roasted agave, rose hip, almonds, and ash. This mezcal jumps around the mouth and hits every receptor. Absolutely incredible!

Rey Campero Mexicano

Jan 26, 2017

Lot DS008-M from March 2018. Love this! A new favorite Mexicano in my book. Notes of chocolate, leather, rawhides, mesquite, and camphor. Strong, long finish. I’m really digging this batch. 4.5 stars

Lot DS001-M from May 2013. Very fruity on the nose with almost no pepper. I normally expect some pepper with agave Mexicano, and this has almost none on the nose. The flavor, however, has strong notes of green pepper and caramel. This mezcal is very full in the mouth and a bit oily. I’m a huge fan of Mexicano and this one is good, but not great. This is a solid Mexicano, but it lacks the wow! factor that I’ve tasted in other Mexicano mezcals. It’s a 3.5 stars.
