Tasted this at my friend’s house a few nights ago, and can’t stop thinking about it. The flavors were really unique, like pineapple and coffee. More than the flavor notes, it had a great intensity. I can appreciate subtlty in a spirit, but with the right flavors, sometimes I want them to really boom. It reminded me of a mezcal version of Aberlour A’bunadh, which is one of my favorites for the same reason – both have a lot of sweetness and body to go along with the heat. Definitely want to find more mal bien papalote.
Tasted this with a friend, who said it reminded him of a stripper at a gas station. Vanilla, a little smoke, and a lot of petrol LOL. We didn’t get any of the tropical fruit notes that I see in a lot of the other reviews here. Maybe it was an off batch? Either way, it’s about as cheap as you can find in Seattle ($28), so it’s hard to complain too much.
My first tobala, and I really enjoyed it. Hard to pinpoint specific notes, but generally sweet and lightly green like grass or fresh herbs. More than the flavors, the creamy texture was what made it a standout.
Pretty inexpressive. A touch of smoke, a touch of fruit. Not a lot to like or dislike one way or the other. Overall, boring but not terrible.
I’m sure there are better bottles for more money, but for the same price as Del Maguey, I thought this was way better. Not super smokey, and there’s some some sweeter and fruitier flavors. Much more interesting on its own, but also really good in a margarita.
Pretty intense right out of the bottle. Big smoke, and some other flavors I couldn’t quite pin down. As a sipper I thought it was 3 stars, but after a few Tommy’s margaritas (just lime and agave syrup) I raise it to 4 stars.
The smoke seemed really balanced with all the other flavors. It had a lot of piney flavors, some mint and sweetness. Coming back to the glass after 10 minutes or so, it started showing a lot of citrus aromas. I’m still a mezcal newbie, but this definitely got my attention.
This was recommended to me as a good introduction to mezcal. If it had been the first mezcal I tasted, it might have also been the last. I’m a peaty scotch drinker, so I’m not afraid of smoke or intense flavors, but the bottle I tried was rough in a not good way, without being especially interesting.
