El Rey Zapoteco Cuishe

Mar 10, 2023

E-0121. 2019
Not at all what I would expect from a karwinskii. Almost non existent nose. Vanilla ice cream and heavy mint with a hint of tobacco and spices. Light but lingering minty finish. Enjoyed this one quite a bit

Machetazo Cupreata

Description specified it’s meant for cocktails but at 40% it’s light and sweet enough that it almost tastes like a cocktail already. Creamy mint. Mellow finish. Inoffensive but also not very exciting. Decent considering the price

Casa Manglar Espadin y Madrecuishe

Jan 31, 2023

Fresh veggies and sweet apples on the nose. Caramel, pine, woodiness, minerals and some chemical notes as well. Finish is a little harsh but not off-putting.

Casa Manglar Madrecuishe

Everything about this was a little muted. Nose was faint. Vaguely sweet and nutty.
Notes of vanilla and wood and artificial sweetener. More watery than I like. Finish is earthy and mellow. Decent mezcal! Better than a mixer mezcal but not something I’d go out of my way to drink

Palenqueros Tobala

BTC001. This is awesome. Extra awesome considering the price point. Almost everything I would want in a tobala. Vanilla and melon on the nose. Creamy, sweet stone fruits on the palate. Delicate, quick finish with zero heat

Chacolo Ixtero Amarillo

Regrettably didn’t grab batch or lot number.

This is awesome. Sweet on the nose. Lots of citrus with some tropical fruit as well. On the palette so many things going on! Mild heat with some crisp vegetale notes. Salt/minerality with some good woody notes. Lightly funky with some solid dill notes on the finish.

Siembra Metl Quiote – Miguel Perez

Lot 2 bottle 23/28

Bright with some citrus on the nose. Heavy on orange and citrus. Super fresh and enjoyable. Little to no heat. Super tasty!

Lot 1
Fruity and sugary. Melon and candy and apple! Really enjoyed this one

Del Maguey Vida de Muertos

Some smoke and citrus on the nose.
Smoke forward with a little heat but in a good way. Sweet and fruity and easy to drink.

Real Minero Cuishe

RMC-01 tasting about 30 seconds after popping the bottle for the first time so it is still a little hot but not unpleasantly so. Pretty mellow on the nose, vaguely sweet with a little smoke. Sweet, earthy, banana heavy (not like runts but actual bananas,) little caramel and super silky. Dark chocolate style bitterness/sweetness on the quick finish. If this gets any better with age it might sneak into 4.5-5 star territory

La Venenosa Los Gigantes

Very interesting bottle. Smells like meat. Straight up. Smells like walking into a deli. Crazy smooth, great mouthfeel. Tastes (almost overwhelmingly) like peperoni with a bit of briny minerality. I think this is the meatiest mezcal I’ve ever tasted. Fades fast. I have very mixed feelings on this one. I really like it but it gets old quickly (dropped a half star from first taste to finishing my very small second pour). Going to keep coming back to this bottle but I don’t see myself ever having more than 1-2 pours of it at a time. If possible try this before buying it because I can see it turning off a lot of people. Hoping it will develop some more depth now that its open.

Chango Loco Espadin

Feb 18, 2021

Lot 301
Sweet vanilla and rubber on the nose. Tastes like diesel with a maybe a hint of orange? Tastes watered down a bit. Finish is more of the same. Not a great mezcal but weirdly I find myself mindlessly sipping it for way longer than expected after the first sip. For the price point you could do a lot worse

Vago Cuixe – Aquilino Garcia Lopez

Very sweet and syrupy on the nose. Just like bananas foster. Really enjoying just sniffing it. Very hot initially but it fades fast and really opens up with lots of sweet tropical fruit. Little bit of roasted veggies too. Finish is super minty and tingly and lingers for a while in the best way

Tosba Cenizo

Lot 34. Fantastic mezcal! I really love sweeter, fruity mezcals and this is right up my alley. On the nose it smells like you just walked into a candy shop that only sells fruit flavored candy flavors. Tastes mildly like big red and is heavy with tropical fruits with a citrus twist and grilled (maybe smoked) pineapple. Slightly oily mouthfeel but in a good way as it helps all those fantastic flavors linger a little longer.

Mezonte Tepe

Jan 28, 2021

Lot 4 from 2019. Smells like fruity cake batter and rain. Crazy smooth! Initial taste is mildly briney and cheesy (not funky, just cheesy) then turns really fruity, buttery and almost meaty. Savory and sweet.
I’m going to be looking for a bottle asap.

Amormata Masparillo – Felipe Soto

Jan 28, 2021

Super interesting! Sweet and salty on the nose. Tastes musty (like grandmas house) and dusty but at the same time its super fresh and green. Bell peppers, celery and mint. Little bit of heat on the finish but not in a bad way. Definitely worth trying if you get a chance!

Gusano Rojo Mezcal

Jan 28, 2021

Oh my god. This is bad. I’ve choked down some terrible mezcals but this is on an entirely new level. To the point that I questioned whether it was actually a mezcal or not. Tried to have few sips to pick out some notes but it wasn’t even worth trying. Straight down the drain with this one

Edit: Subjected my poor girlfriend to this monstrosity of a beverage and she said it tastes like battery acid mixed with sunscreen. I agree wholeheartedly so there are some tasting notes for ya

NETA Tepextate – Heriberto García Sánchez

Dec 11, 2020

Very fresh and bright on the nose. Green peppers, tropical fruit, mild leather, pine and a pleasant lingering heat. Not mind blowing but definitely solid and extremely drinkable.

NETA Bicuixe + Jabalín

Dec 11, 2020

ENNCEL1905 Very dry, salty and lots of sweet minerals on the nose. Very dry on the palate which I typically don’t care for but the flavors here make up for it. Sweet, caramel, subtle vanilla, mint. Tragically quick finish

San Bartolo Espadin

Very bright and fresh. Very floral and citrus with a little smoky sweetness. Good, easy sipper. Really solid espadin
