El Destilado Madrecuixe

Jul 29, 2020

Seriously good!
Mint, wood, mineral on the nose.
Earth, mineral, light fruit and sweetness on the palate, nice tingling mint finish.
Slightly thick but very clean.
Evolves with every sip.
Lush.

La Medida Arroqueno

Jul 29, 2020

Nose is pleasant: Mint, earth, wood, mineral
Palate: Mineral then sweetness, fruit, more earth and mint.
Solid and very drinkable.
1st Medida and it’s pretty good.
Lot 1701

El Destilado Sierra Negra

Jul 29, 2020

Earth, dust, wet road on the nose with hints of fruit and citrus.
Leather, grapefruit, pepper, more dust, light mint also towards the finish
Very smooth, nice warmth but not hot, and a long finish.
03/16, 70 BTLs

El Destilado Pechuga de Mole Poblano

Jul 22, 2020

Batch 420; Dec 2017
OK, so I’m probably at a disadvantage here as I’ve never tried Mole (Oaxaca I’ll see you one day soon I hope) and this is also my first Pechuga.
However… It smells like a delicious BBQ sauce on the nose, a mix of savoury, spice and light sweetness. Strong. Like nothing I’ve ever experienced in a spirit before. Wow. Was tempted to throw it on the chicken before the next BBQ if only the weather was better in the UK!
You want flavours on the palate? Shit… This IS complex but let me try – savoury, sweet, spices – that’s all I’ve got, but moreish.
I will say this is more of an acquired taste but it’s worth the journey in my view.
I recommend trying this or the 5 Sentidos equivalent also by Marcelo Luna with same production. He clearly knows his stuff.

El Destilado Bicuixe – Madrecuixe

Jul 22, 2020

Batch 400; April 2014
Very clean, smooth and drinkable. Really soft on the palate.
Mineral, pine, grass on the nose.
Another complex one for me but maybe I’m just not great at packaging yet 🙂
Fruit and floral, light sweetness and mineral in taste. Very pleasant finish.
I’ve revisited this bottle a few times prior to this review and it keeps growing on me. 4 stars for now but it might prove to be a bit harsh.

Del Maguey Chichicapa

Jul 22, 2020

Lot 191
Can see this long being a staple in the collection. Best Espadin I’ve tried so far. Easy sipper. Complex with lots of flavours. Smells delicious (definite hint of BBQ in there and what smells better than that!?)
Light sweetness, citrus, earthiness, nice smoke and more flavours it’ll take some time to get to grips with. Should have picked this one up sooner.
Any recommendations for other Espadins which can compete I would welcome 🙂

Sin Gusano Cuishe & Coyote – Amatlan

Jul 15, 2020

Bottle 13/75; 2019
Very easy to drink, smooth – even at 50% ABV. Banana, chopped wood, light acetone on the nose. Banana carries through to the palate, mixed with brown sugar, clove and light orange. Nice lingering finish. This is good!

Koch Espadin Artesanal

Jul 8, 2020

For me, a very good entry-level Mezcal, especially considering the price. Not the complexity of higher grade liquids, but still respectable nonetheless. I’d like to try others in this brand as this a good starter. Fair play, I’ll have this as my go-to Mezcal cocktail mixer for now, although I think for it to last In that place it needs a little more smoke. Lot 12/19

Papadiablo Especial

Jul 8, 2020

NOM-F2280. Can’t read hand written batch number – best guess PPD501
One of my first mezcals, and one which convinced me it was worthwhile continuing on this fascinating journey of discovery. Nose is complex but chemical overtone.
Clove, pepper and spice on the palate. Hot finish but lingers nicely.
Will always have a soft spot for what it led me to.

Vago Espadin – Emigdio Jarquin Ramirez

Jul 8, 2020

Lot: E-14-E-18
Was expecting a little more from my first venture into the Vago brand (yes I get this is not the highest rated bottle but first impressions last).
Still, it’s not a bad espadin. Acetone and Light caramel on the nose, slightly sweet with hints of fruit on the palate. Has a kick though, which I don’t mind. Decent and can be a sipper but think I’ll be using this more as a mixer (mainly because I need room in the Mezcal cupboard for varieties I just need to try!)

Siete Misterios Doba-Yej

Jul 8, 2020

NOM-0153. Lot: DBY06/19
Vanilla on the nose, acetone. Vanilla continues less strongly on the palate, some fruit, sweet. A decent Espadin but not mind blowing. Think there are better Espadins on the market for the price. Having said that, it stood out as different and therefore wouldn’t argue against trying.

Sacapalabras Tobala

Jul 8, 2020

Sacapalabras bottle (brand in UK covering Lalocura). Eduardo Angeles and all details the same. NOM-0296X.
Apple, grasses, mild clay on the nose. Smells refreshing and light. Taste is harder to decipher but interesting. Some fruit, mild sweetness, also sour notes. Smooth but also a mild creamy feel.

Del Maguey Wild Jabali

Jul 8, 2020

Smells great. Grass, flowers, herbs and citrus on the nose. Interesting flavour profile – light but smooth, herbal, some grapefruit, slight wood with pepper on the finish. Light. My first Jabali and up there with the most pleasant mezcals I’ve tried so far. Solid.
Lot JAB 191.
