Mal Bien Arroqueño – Chucho + Poncho Sánchez

May 2, 2022

From Agave Mixtape 7:

Nose — Lactic cheesy notes, hints of mesquite smoke, light vinegar, chipotle, brine.

Palate — mesquite bbq mixes with brine, chipotle and green peppers, which may sound bad, but is actually great. a black pepper bite, but still quite smooth. after the initial kick, there’s a nice bit of sweet and savoriness.

Finish — The peppers and spice fade into bbq sweetness. It lingers quite a bit with a good mouthfeel. Nothing bitter about this one.

I really enjoyed this one, but I’m a bit partial to arroqueño. While the nose maybe isn’t the most interesting, the flavors are top notch and the finish lasts for days.

Maguey Melate Jabali – German Manzano Martínez

Dec 5, 2021

Had this from the 2021 December/2022 January Mezcalero of the Month Club.

Nose: Mint, grass, a fair bit of ethanol. Very bright and light. Hints of pepper.

Taste: Sweet, has an interesting burn to it which is very sharp, almost like a chemical reaction (somewhat similar to other Jabalis I’ve had). I’m sipping this after the Rey Campero Jabali, and actually prefer this one. Even with the sharp burn it has a nice smoothness to it. Has some sour and bitterness to it on the very end. Not a particularly oily mouthfeel either.

Overall: This is really enjoyable. Fun to sip and quite the experience. One of the better mezcals I’ve tasted.

Mal Bien Arroqueno – Cortes

Nov 1, 2021

While I’ve not had too many mezcals (less than 20), this one I think is just delicious. It’s bright, fresh and the peppery taste of it is fantastic. The mouthfeel is kind of like a red wine high in tannins. It’s got a hint of smoke and a sweet barbeque flavor to it. Just delicious really. I’m surprised the rating is as low as it is compared to other mezcals on here I’ve tasted (which IMO are not nearly as good). Honestly this is one of the favorite mezcals I’ve had so far, just lovely.
