Espada Pequeña Mezcal Artesanal is a private label product for the Trader Joe’s grocery store chain. It is produced by Benevá Mezcal, an industrial brand based in Oaxaca, Mexico. This mezcal is produced using Maguey Espadin. The cooked agave is milled using a stone tahona and mechanical shredder. It is distilled in copper.

Benevá Mezcal

Mezcal Benevá was founded in 2000. Their processing plant is located just 22 kilometers outside of Oaxaca City on the Oaxaca-Istmo highway. It is located in in the Central Valley of Oaxaca outside of Santiago Matatlan, an area considered to be the “World’s Mezcal Capital”. The brand produces 100% agave mezcal in its four variants: Joven, Reposado con Gusano, Añejo, and Extra Añejo.

No bad, really cheap but not bad for mixing in a margarita or something. Not a sipper.

Cheapest bottle of mezcal I’ve ever bought in the US – all the trappings of cheap mezcal but certainly has its place if you’re looking for a cheap alternative to make cocktails with. Light, thin, and smokey but I can imagine it would go well in a Paloma.
