Paquera Barril

Aug 24, 2021

I’m glad I picked this one up, a new arrival at a nearby store ($70). Unlike the description above, the mezcalero is Isaac Vasquez (sticker over the label). Lot PA00012BAR20. The label says 42.5% ABV, but it seems to have a little more heat than I would expect for that level. My experience is quite different than the previous review, this definitely checks the boxes for things I recognize and enjoy about the Karwinskiis I’ve encountered. A good example of the variation that can occur between producers, batches, etc. I will look for this one again.

Nose- fresh grass, green vegetables, hint of vanilla, and fermenting funk (I’m reminded of the fiber crust above the tepache).
Taste- first wave is true to the nose with fresh green flavors. Some mineral/wet stone components then take over, like a humid basement (in a good way), a long finish with a little citrus and vanilla, among a stronger floral background.
Mouthfeel- moderate texture, slight oil/buttery quality, lingering for a few minutes, sticking to the roof and sides of the mouth.
