Alipus San Juan

Aug 29, 2023

Round but bright up front, lots of salinity (maybe a bit of pear?) into its defining, long chalky finish. Like taking a bite out of the riverside dirt of an Oceans Inlet. Some lactic acid gives it a bit of pleasant funk but mostly rustic smoke. Not incredibly memorable, but would drink again! A bit more smoke than I like, which could lead to a good cocktail experience vs a sipping libation.

Del Maguey Madrecuixe

Jun 1, 2023

Nose is less floral and more petrol forward than I expect in a Madrecuixe. First sip is bracingly sweet, toothpaste level menthol into candied papaya. Very rich and gentle mouthfeel. Spicy cinnamon finish. Relatively desirable notes, but to me the spirit itself reads as so sweet to the palate that it blankets the redeeming qualities. A good pour for someone looking to explore mezcal a bit more; it may beget excitement while remaining approachable, but it isn’t one I’m excited to revisit. Maybe for dessert.
