About this mezcal

Doña Vega Espadin is produced in Santiago Matatlan, Oaxaca using 100% Maguey Espadin (Agave Angustifolia). It is produced by a 5th generation family run by the mother and her 3 daughters. This mezcal is produced using traditional practices. The “Capón” agaves are harvested and cooked in an underground horno. Next, they are fermented and distilled in copper pots. The final product is distilled to proof. Doña Vega Espadin has notes of light smoke with undertones of fruit and a white pepper finish.

Doña Vega Mezcal

Doña Vega Mezcal began as a passion project by founder Sonya Vega Auvray. After discovering mezcal, she became obsessed with the bold taste, but found that many versions were too smoky or intense. After traveling throughout Oaxaca she created Doña Vega Mezcal. Her creative blend honors the bold tradition and unique flavors of mezcal with a modern twist.

Clean nose. Some light aromas of flowers and live oak pollen, but nothing super strong. The palate is fruity with notes of papaya, mango, and pineapple. This is very light but enjoyable.

Wow, the tasting notes are spot on. Definitely a smoke-forward mezcal which isn’t a bad thing. It is not overpowering but it is prominent. Certain smoky mezcals taste artificial or chemically. This more like standing near a barbecue on a nice sunny day. There is some sweetness mid-palate and then the finish is totally white pepper. There is a slight tingle mid-palate like a brief Szechuan button note. If I had a bottle I would use in cocktails but it can be sipped too (unlike VIDA which is too smoky to sip and in a similar price range). This would be the perfect recommendation for those mezcal newbies that want “something smoky”. No batch info – 100ml sample bottle.
