About this destilado

Maguey Melate Mango Chaparro from Jaime Moreles Aquino was produced at his “Yuu Baa, Tierra Caliente” palenque in Villa Hidalgo Yalala, Oaxaca. This spirit contains no agave whatsoever. So why is it on Mezcal Reviews? Because maestro Jaime also produces agave spirits and we think this distilled mango is badass. The mango was harvested, but never cooked. Instead, the mangoes were squeezed by hand and added to small clay fermentation pots. Once fermented, it was double distilled in a clay pot still.

Maguey Melate

Maguey Melate was founded on two ideas: 1) Artisanal agave spirits are amazing and should be shared with the world, and 2) The faster-cheaper economy is a harmful force for people, the environment, and now agave spirits.

They believe if mezcal (and agave spirits) can be understood and appreciated at its full potential, people will show their preference for quality artisanal mezcal that is sustainably and fairly sourced. By raising consumer consciousness on the origins of mezcal and educating enthusiasts on matters of quality and character, informed people will be empowered to ensure the future of mezcal. To do this, they're reaching a large audience with an impactful message: KEEP MEZCAL ARTISANAL!

Maguey Melate is perhaps most well-known for their Mezcalero of the Month Club, which delivers artisanal small-batch agave spirits directly to the doors of consumers in the US and Mexico. In addition to the monthly spirits, they offer exclusive content and interviews with producers. Single releases are also available in the Maguey Melate shop.

Batch: JOS-MAN-001 Bottle: 27
Nose – Green mango fruit. Mango seed. A slight ethanol roughness.

Palate – It’s a mango explosion, no doubt about that. I really agree Rakhal’s description of this being the whole plant/fruit. But with that, to me it’s very unripe. In the finish there’s a nice, little spicy bump (white pepper). This has a mango fruity sweetness to it but it’s getting outmuscled by the bitter/green component. Overall, this is still a tasty spirit and damn unique. I’d recommend anyone to try it out.

What the…?!?! Somehow this is more mango then an actual mango. This is like you are sipping the entire mango plant. The skin, the seed, the flesh, the leaves, the earth that the tree is growing in. This is like taking a bite out of the ancestral god mango. I absolutely love this.

Id hate to give this any less than 4.5 stars. The mango is there. The drinkability is there. The mouthfeel is there. This is just fantastic. Reminds me of filled wax candies or hard strawberry candy with the jelly/juice in the middle. Gonna have to slowly sip on this one

Lot JOS-MAN-001. Tastes like mango. Smells like mango. Made from mango. It all makes sense! I’m a mango fanatic and the idea of distilled mango (in clay pots nonetheless) totally rocks my world. I wouldn’t reach for this bottle regularly as it’s quite unique. It’ll hold a special spot on my shelf.

Batch JOS-MAN-001
Very tasty. Taste is much closer to an agave sprit instead of a charanda/rum flavor that I expected. It’s sweet, but not overly. I think the minerality from the clay pot distillation balances the sweetness nicely. Mango flavor is distinct, but this doesn’t just taste like fruit juice.
