2018, series #2: Seventeen different master-crafted spirits by five independent artisan producers from four pueblos San Agustin Amatengo, San Baltazar Guelevila, Chichicapam and San Luis Amatlan; spirits from eleven wild and cultivated varietals, and three specialty batches (pechuga de conejo, espadin capon, espadin con frutas).
2019, series #4, first release: A hand-selected selection of fifteen beautifully complex artisanal small batch agave spirits – by Abel Martinez of Santo Domingo Albarradas, Berta & Mario Vasquez of San Baltazar Chichicapam, Aureliano Hernandez of San Baltazar Guelevila, Reina Sanchez of San Luis Amatlan, Leonardo of San Baltazar Guelevila, and Simeon & Apolonio Ramirez of San Agustin Amatengo. Labels in this series were printed on a handful of colored fiber papers including amate (shown below presenting Berta’s ensamble).
Rezpiral
Rezpiral brings selections of high-quality traditional small-batch (non-certified) Mezcals into a handful of places in the USA. At the core of the project is the embrace of an ethos that aims to respect and support the multi-generational knowledge, independence, flavors, lands, and ways of each mezcalero family.
Rezpiral’s small scale allows for the advocacy of diversity on different levels, from supporting the autonomy of producers & their continued production of artisanal mezcals to the preservation of local land control. Rezpiral actively supports master artisan’s proactive planting and management of agave; recollecting and incubating seeds, transplanting and farming diverse species of endemic agave in sustainable ways. Rezpiral directs 10% of earnings back into supporting artisans farming.
Rezpiral has a regional greenhouse to support independent small scale mezcaleros in cultivating and reforesting their lands with local endangered wild agave varietals. They also are highly focused on a cultural and conservation residency program.

144 reviewsCrisp and juicy on the palate. Some cabbage, bell pepper, fun cotton candy and raspberry. Light clay and ash, some faint plasticity.
This very much strays from the typical string bean bomb that many Teps are to me and I love it. Savoring this bottle so I don’t run out.

14 reviewsBrilliant. Lush. Well integrated alcohol/terroir with mouthfillingly rounded finish … smooth, long and satisfying. Plump & quite dry but not lacking, despite very slim fruit tones. Among Series 4 releases, this is a standout, for sure. Powerful & compact. Smoldering clove and banana skin lurk beneath, yet slyly quiet overall. Absolutely delicious (and I am currently drinking several other Rezpiral S4s).

663 reviewsDry and ashy as other reviewers have noted. This is a rugged authentic smoked agave type of mezcal. I think the smoke fans out there will love this one. It is a little less green and vegetal than the Tepextate mezcals I usually prefer, but the charred fruit flavors here are still enjoyable. With more time in the glass, I get a little bit of tangerine. This one leaves a nice tingling sensation in your mouth.

725 reviewsSuper fruity and sugary nose, reminiscent of Fruity Pebbles cereal in aroma. So it’s not quite tropical smelling, but it’s got berries, melons, and some dark tree fruit…. just about everything fruity you can squeeze into a bottle. The palate is a lot drier than the nose. Notes of figs, dried dates, and raisins mixing with a bit of ash and spearmint on the finish. Series 4. 50.5% ABV.

7 reviewsRezpiral Apolonio and Simeon Ramirez Tepextate 2017 Series 2 bottle 18/133
Upon first opening the bottle I got a huge wave of wet cigarette ash, just overpowering. It has since mellowed out (thankfully!) to give green peppers, wet ash, desert sage, rock dust and mint.
Some real heat on the tongue which keeps me from sipping this too often. Tastes of white pepper and sugar cane, not a lot of complexity.
Not my go-to bottle, I still have 3/4 of it left, but I take it out occasionally
