El Yope Espadin

May 7, 2020

Mezcalero: Ismael Rosales, Lot# AOYD Bottle: FEG ABV: 46%
Pineapple, hints of lemon grass, for the ABV, quite mellow and easy to sip, clean finish. Don’t disagree with Jonny on the overall evaluation.

Banhez Cuishe

Apr 22, 2020

Donaciano Pacheco 9/18 Lot# CU470315. Taking a break from my revisitation of espadins. Aromas of fresh cut grass, a touch of earth and minerality, a deep well of herbal flavors, complex and yet approachable. A very good expression of Cuishe.

Rey Campero Espadin

Apr 22, 2020

Rómulo Sánchez Parada, July 2019, Lot DSO28-E, a sweet nose that turns into a strong charred smell, a lot of herbal notes, bits of pepper and spice, a touch of earth. A good mezcal for the price.

El Jolgorio Espadin

Apr 18, 2020

Edition 07, 2014, Pedro Vasquez, first exposure to Jolgorio outside of a mezcal bar tasting. Batch# PVOES041217EJ. Tastes like a clay distillation, the label does say copper with three years resting in glass. Wonderful flavor as it warms the palate, not much smoke, a touch of anise, nice spice and lingering finish. Really special. Great discovery on my reunion tour of espadins.

Vago Espadin – Emigdio Jarquin Ramirez

Apr 18, 2020

We tasted the Emigdio Jarquin July 2019 batch, Lot # E-22-F-19. Have had Aqulino’s espadin in the past (and have a new bottle of Barriga’s Espadin, also very good). Very smooth, slight herbaceous notes, sweet, nice lingering taste of vanilla and an earthy, almost mineral flavor (although it is distilled in copper not clay). Really solid mezcal for the price. Rediscovering the Espadins after being reintroduced a year ago to Cuish (the brand not the agave) and their Espadin was outstanding. In that rarefied company.
