Bozal Tobala is bright and fresh with citrus and earthy flavors. It has aromas of ripe melon and apricots, and a finish of smoked tropical fruit.
About this mezcal
Bozal Tobala is made with maguey Tobala that took 12-15 years to reach maturity. The Tobala is a very small agave that can only be grown from seed, meaning that it takes a lot of Tobala plants to make a single batch of mezcal and it can be difficult for some producers to repopulate the plants that are used. This mezcal is made in San Juan Bautista Jayacatlán, Oaxaca.
Bozal Mezcal
Mezcal Bozal is a craft, artisan, handmade Mezcal. They celebrate the wild side of the Mezcal world and the wild agave used to produce such rich spirits. They use agave from the steep precarious hillsides of Oaxaca and Guerrero that are indigenous to the region. These varietals produce flavors that are exotically intense, with rich earth tones and savory smokiness. From the heart of the maguey these flavors are traditionally extracted to produce mezcal that is wildly refined.

Tried a copita at Sayulita Tap Room in Indio in February 2023.
Nose: Clean, minerals, and floral notes.
Palate: Strong minearlity, floral, mild tropical fruit, slight bitterness and subdued background heat. Great mouthfeel, a little buttery.
Overall a solid tobalá

Nose- heavy, floral, fruits with slight smoke/char
Palate- alcohol loud, mineral, creamy, heavy… maybe with smoke and alcohol?
Finish- alcohol, slight acetone, tinge on the tongue
Overall- a brighter spicier experience. Upon exhale big alcohol gives way to more notes upon inhale. Drinks higher than its proof. This lacks complexity and balance but worth trying.
I may be a bit biased as I haven’t fallen for Bozal in general.

I am in love with this expression!!
It is very mineral/saline and earthy on the nose accompanied by a crisp and clean saline flavor. I will certainly be revisiting this bottle but it isn’t too complex for me. The minerality shines through but what is truly special about this expression is the mouthfeel. One of the softest non pechuga mezcales I’ve tasted and is for that reason very beginner friendly.

Wet stones, cured meats, and cream cheese on the nose. Starts similar on the palate but then the sweet, floral tobala appears before a medium finish that’s just a little ashy. Not your typical tobala, for good and bad

Nose: Meat like dried and smoked pork, pepper, brine. Sweet, guava, mango, and some dark chocolate in there. A bit of earthiness comes through.
Palate: Medium oily mouthfeel. Dried and smoked meat, smoke, earthiness. Dark Chocolate, pineapple, mango, heavy brine, peppery.
Finish: Medium length. Dry. Meaty, Briney, light mango, peppery, earthy.
This is vastly different from the other Tobala’s I have had. It way more balanced and leans heavily into this meaty and briney profile that I really dig. Lots of salt, earth, and meat with some light fruits sprinkled in make this a real winner in my book .

144 reviewsSavory blend of sweet, meaty and earthy. Cream cheese frosting is center stage, with musty, grassy cardboard, pepper, cured meats and mango. Berries, namely blackberry, faint brine and some ash. Very delicious.
This is really something. Very different from a lot of Tobala Ive had previous to this, but this bottle brings some welcome diversity to that plane.
