About this mezcal

Bozal Tepeztate is made with agave Tepeztate (Marmorata), which has a distinct, erratic leaf structure and flourishes best on the sides of steep, rocky cliffs. This mezcal was produced in Santa Ana del Rio, Oaxaca. This mezcal has herbaceous aromas, with a touch of wet stone on the nose, accompanied by grapefruit zest, orange flower and pine.

Bozal Mezcal

Mezcal Bozal is a craft, artisan, handmade Mezcal. They celebrate the wild side of the Mezcal world and the wild agave used to produce such rich spirits. They use agave from the steep precarious hillsides of Oaxaca and Guerrero that are indigenous to the region. These varietals produce flavors that are exotically intense, with rich earth tones and savory smokiness. From the heart of the maguey these flavors are traditionally extracted to produce mezcal that is wildly refined.

This Tepextate severely disappoints with its lack of complexity. I’m usually a huge fan of Tepe, but the lack of a body and dry profile doesn’t give the clarity of better produced Tepextates. This line may have harvested the agave early considering the low ABV of 45 and lack of frontal aroma. The flavor can satisfy your pallet for the price, but I recommend searching for a Tepextate from a higher altitude. Check out San Luis Del Rio or Ocotlan if you want to experience an aromatic and herbal flavor of more complexity.

If you insist on getting a Tepeztate and you want to save $35 then this is a great option to get you started. Hardly any options for for this agave at this price point so they get a little bump in scoring and the juice is equal to some more expensive options also. Great tasting notes from other reviewers here already but just manage your expectations and enjoy the fresh green/medicinal/smooth vibes.

Lot No. 00419

Sweet aromas of bubblegum and cotton candy, hints of herbal/minty postage stamps. The flavors are a bit swampy and medicinal, a bit salinic, and very sweet. Pleasant, worth the price, but not a bottle I’d buy again.

Nose: Snow peas (nicked that but it’s dead on), bell pepper, wet stones. Adds some cream cheese frosting on the palate. Jalapeno and minerality na medium finish.

Lot No: 00218
Nose: Invigorating but not aggressive. Snow peas. Green pepper.

Palate: Cool, incredibly steady sweetness (cake frosting) profile. The sweet fades smoothly to a jalapeño and saline/mineral finish. I’m a huge fan!

Usually with a Tepeztate I hope to get that complex mix of different vegetables on the palate and did not get that with this. A little bit of bell pepper and that’s about it. Could have been a bad batch.

Long, rich and really complex. Lots of smoke, pepper, snap pea, cream cheese frosting and mango.
