El Rey Zapoteco is one of the oldest brands in all of Oaxaca. They have been producing artisinal Mezcal in the same fashion since the 1960’s.
About this mezcal
El Rey Zapoteco Anejo is made with agave Espadin in Santiago Matatlan, Oaxaca. The agave are traditionally cooked in an underground oven for 4 to 7 days, milled by horse-drawn tahona, fermented in open air with natural yeasts, and double distilled in copper stills. After distillation, this mezcal is rested in white oak barrels for at least 12 months before bottling. The ABV may vary depending on where you purchase. Check your bottle for details.
El Rey Zapoteco Mezcal
One of Oaxaca’s oldest artisanal mezcal brands that still produces its mezcal in-house, El Rey Zapoteco was founded in 1960 by Don Serafín Hernandez Blas in Santiago Matatlán. Today, the business is run by the family matriarch Doña Juana and Don Serafin’s sons. Caretakers of agave fields that routinely yield some of Oaxaca’s largest agaves, the Hernandez family are faithful stewards of production techniques that remain the same as they were at their founding.
