Los Javis Tepeztate is made in Santiago Matatlan, the “Mezcal Capital of the World,” which is just outside Oaxaca City.
About this mezcal
Los Javis Tepeztate is made with agave Tepeztate in Santiago Matatlan, Oaxaca. The agave used to make this mezcal were roasted in an underground oven, crushed by horse drawn tahona, fermented with open air yeasts, and double distilled in a copper pot still.
Los Javis Mezcal
Mezcal Los Javis is a family owned and operated distillery. Their palenque was built in Santiago Matatlan in 1979, and the Los Javis brand was founded in 2003 by Javier Mateo and his wife. The couple made a promise to plant and harvest the highest quality agave to create a mezcal of the finest variety. So fine that it would carry the family name, Javier, for three generations. Father, son, and grandson (all named Javier) began their journey when Javier Senior instilled in his family the quality and heritage of the mezcal making process.

122 reviews2015, batch TZ 007 47%. After sampling Los Javis’ Espadín and reposado this was an improvement in the evening! The aroma was ok, a bit floral with river rock. The taste was good with light garden qualities of cucumber and cilantro. Overall a good tepextate. Thanks Guillermo (from Los Javis) for the taste (or two…or three).

663 reviewsNice spicy notes. Almost too sweet. No punch. Cinnamon apple juice ala Apple Jacks. This was a 2,400 bottle batch. More candy than agave. Not bad but not the type of agave Tepextate mezcal that I’ve come to enjoy from other mezcaleros. Not sure of the price point – if it is expensive then this is more of a 2 star mezcal.
