About this mezcal

Mestiza Negra Mezcal is produced by Juana Escobar Bautista using Maguey Espadin (Agave angustifolia) in Santiago Matatlán, Oaxaca. They aim to use more mature agaves with a target of 10 years in age which results in a more complex mezcal. The agaves are cooked using a light roasting method which helps preserve the natural flavors inherit to the plant. After being cooked underground, the agave is tahona-crushed and naturally fermented with wild yeasts. This mezcal is fruity on the palate, with slight minerality, and a long mellow finish.

Mestiza Negra Mezcal

Produced in small batches in the heart of Oaxaca, Mestiza Negra Mezcal is handmade from field to bottle using strictly single origin agaves and artisanal production techniques.

Lot 098GSG

For the price point, this Espadin is very special and unique. I thought for the price, this was just going to be a generic mezcal. The nose is floral, earthy, a bit of a hint of berries. The taste I got from this was sweet, citrus, earthy and subtle/light smoke at the finish. Very natural, Unlike other espadin’s out there this has a a very clean finish. This mezcal is versatile and enjoyable. Im typically a wild agave drinker because it’s difficult to find good espadin’s.

Lot 1PT15(?)

Compared to the last Miahuatlan espadin I tried, this is more cheesy, dirty / soil, almost leaning towards some Raicilla tones. Light nut butters, I’m not great at cheeses but I’ll suggest Parmesan, Expo Markers, some dried lime peel, cloves, and cayenne.

Acidic!, almost thin, funky. Sour milk! (though not unpleasant), salt, green/herbaceous notes. Not much obvious fruit I can place, something nearing a leather note / bovine. Finish is pretty pleasant and complex. Gotta admire the character for the region.

sweet nose and palate. thick body with lingering smokey aftertaste. extremely pleasant with no ‘bandaid’ taste present in other mezcals at this price range (xicaru, silencio). will drink again.

This Espadin mezcal has some interesting lactic and creamy notes that differentiate it from other mezcals from the same town, agave, and price. I recommend giving it a try if you are trying lower cost Espadin mezcals and want to explore more adventurous flavors. Lot 1PT15(?), bottle 0853. 45% ABV.
