About this destilado de agave

Mezcalosfera Espadin / Madrecuixe / Bicuixe is produced by Felipe de Jesus Cortés, who as of the time of this release in 2020, was just 22 years old. He grew up in the mezcal community of rural Miahuatlán alongside his father Margarito and brother Job, and he spent formative years working for Mezcaloteca, operating their bottling facility.

Mezcalosfera de Mezcaloteca

Mezcalosfera de Mezcaloteca is the exported bottling from Mezcaloteca, the famous bar in Oaxaca City that is renowned for their educational tastings. They source all of their agave spirits directly from producers in seldom-traveled parts of Oaxaca that are often hard to get to. They put an exceptional amount of information on their labels, and all of their releases are very small batches that exhibit the most unique characteristics of mezcal. Though only a few batches have been brought into the US, there are dozens upon dozens of different varieties available for sale at their tasting room in Oaxaca City. Most of their spirits are labeled “Aguardiente de Agave”, however all of their limited exports are certified “Mezcal”. These mezcals are imported into the United States by Heavy Metl Premium Imports, which also imports popular brands Mezcal Real Minero and Rey Campero Mezcal.

Lote 013MEMBUSA-21 May 2021, 51.1%

Nose – Fresh and chalky – laundry, pine, cleaning supplies, tobacco.

Palate – Bright opening flavor. Sweet and tangy that turns into a smoky, nutty fruitiness. Licorice, almonds, oranges, grapes, vanilla, dark chocolate, and black cherries. Like having a slice of holiday fruitcake chased with a splash of bong water.

Finish – Vanilla, tobacco, wet cigarettes, cough syrup, Shishito peppers.

Clean and fresh tasting, almost medicinal in a way. Very enjoyable and unique, but with some fairly noticeable smoke and burnt notes. At only 80 liters, it’s definitely worth a try if you have the chance.

I love this. Ivan at Madre recommended it recently and afterwards I quickly ordered a full bottle. This reminds me of some of the early US releases of Mezcalosfera from Felipe Cortes (a different mezcalero). It has those amazing bubblegum and mineral notes. A perfect balance of agaves – not too sweet, not too dry. Some might find it a bit perfume-like but this is my jam. May 2021, 80 liters.
