Mezcalero No. 11

Sep 18, 2016

This is an incredible four-agave ensamble from Alberto Ortiz and released by Mezcalero. The Mexicano agave gives it a nice fruity brightness, the two karwinskii agave varieties add sweet and floral notes, and the espadin binds the flavors together beautifully for a smooth finish. This same ensamble made by the same mezcalero, “Don Beto”, can be found under the name Mezcal Papadiablo Especial. It is also delicious, however that mezcal is not quite as smooth and complex as this small-batch Mezcalero release. Might have to buy another bottle before this edition disappears forever, the Mezcalero #11 is that good!

Gracias a Dios Tepextate

Sep 18, 2016

Definitely a fan of this tepextate considering that it’s one of the most affordable and retains some of the classic tepextate flavors. It’s got a great tobacco spice and sweet finish. Overall very vegetal. Not quite as “wild” and complex as some of the high-end tepextates but it is enjoyable. This is a great one to share with mezcal newbies without emptying your bank account. At a bar my taster was more heavy tobacco whereas the bottle I picked up (GAD-X 0379) was less so, so likely a different batch but regardless a big fan of this mezcal.

Amaras Cupreata

Sep 17, 2016

The Amores Cupreata is a very unique mezcal. There are some really nice floral, vegetal, and minty notes in this mezcal. For the price of approximately $50 USD this is a great mezcal for your collection. It goes down very easy at 40% ABV. I’m very interested to try the other offerings from Amores and from the state of Guerrero.
