About this mezcal

Catedral Espadin is produced by Jorge Octavio Cardaz Cualtamirano in Municipo San Pablo Etla Villa, Poblado Morales, Oaxaca. Part farmer, part botanist, maestro Jorge combines tradition with science. He has built a palenque, alongside a plant laboratory in the mountains outside Oaxaca City. In the lab, five biologists work to find the perfect environment to cultivate wild agave plants.

This mezcal won a Gold Medal at the 2022 Artisan Awards and a Silver Medal at the 2022 California Craft Spirits Competition.

Catedral Mezcal

Catedral Mezcal has pledged a portion of the stock in the US brand to a nonprofit in Mexico entitled “Catedral de mi Padre Community Support Organization.” The mandate of the fund is for the betterment of the families making Catedral Mezcal in Oaxaca. The process has been structured so that the maestro mezcaleros receive equity based on their individual contributions of mezcal to the brand.

Lot: 30
46% ABV
Sweet (naturally) with a slight prickle on the initial nasal impact.
Aroma leads with tangerine citrus and cantaloupe followed by cold limestone, fennel, dried white flowers and jalapeno. Earthiness follows.
Oily mouthfeel with sufficient alcohol.
Tangerine citrus and lemon zest hit up front on the flavor, but don’t stop there. That rare spicy jalapeno cuts in, mild fennel tops, white chocolate. The finish is a unique combination of cooling limestone chalk and earthy mushroom. The finish is so pleasing, man – that mushroom pops up and really balances (or creates a ruckus) on the palate. Go back and take another sip and this roller coaster starts all over again. It’s been a while since I got this deep into an Espadin (bottle kill in 2 sittings) and couldn’t put it down. For $57, it’s a ton of fun
