About this mezcal
Catedral Tobala is produced by René Parada Barriga in Santiago Matatlan, Oaxaca. For 3 generations, Tio René’s family has been making mezcal. Using the same techniques that his ancestors used, maestro Tio René crafts unique flavors of mezcal with wild agave. As a child, Tio René would help his father harvest wild magueys in the mountains. He worked with his hands, crushing agaves into mash and remembers watching the natural fermentation process start.
This mezcal won a Silver Medal at the 2022 World Wine and Spirits Competition, and a Gold Medal at the 2023 San Diego International Wine and Spirit Challenge.
Catedral Mezcal has pledged a portion of the stock in the US brand to a nonprofit in Mexico entitled “Catedral de mi Padre Community Support Organization.” The mandate of the fund is for the betterment of the families making Catedral Mezcal in Oaxaca. The process has been structured so that the maestro mezcaleros receive equity based on their individual contributions of mezcal to the brand.
