Cuentacuentos Seemanniana

Cuentacuentos Seemanniana is made from agave Seemanniana. Mezcalero Ángel Cruz Calvo crafts this mezcal at palenque in Sola de Vega, Oaxaca.

About this destilado de agave

Cuentacuentos Seemanniana is made from maguey Tobala, which in this rare case is referring to an agave Seemanniana. This mezcal was distilled from Mezcalero Ángel Cruz Calvo’s own crop of cultivated agave Seemanniana. Ángel Cruz Calvo, who is the grandfather of Ángel Cruz Robles, crafted this mezcal at palenque in Sola de Vega, Oaxaca. His palenque is near a sacred creek that regularly draws religious pilgrims from miles away. This mezcal is cooked for 72 hours in an underground oven and then left to ferment for 8-9 days before being double-distilled in clay pot stills.

As of 2021, Ángel Cruz Robles has produced batches under the destilado de agave label.

Cuentacuentos

Cuentacuentos curates small-batch traditional mezcals and destilados de agave from producers across the state of Oaxaca. Cuentacuentos released its first 6 mezcal expressions in 2018; future releases from the brand will change over time and include non-certified mezcals. The logo and bottle artwork (by artist Cesar Ruiz Conseco) features an opossum or tlacuache in Spanish. The tlacuache on the logo is El Viejito, the little old man opposum who stole mezcal from the demons as a service to humanity. The tlacuache ranks with the jaguar, eagle, and burro in importance in Zapotec, Taina, and Mexican mythologies. Cuentacuentos is bottled under NOM-O20X by Carlos Méndez Blas. The Cuentacuentos motto is Mezcal brings people together, stories make us friends.

Tried completely blind.

Hot on the nose, but not on the pallet. Really like it but struggling to identify the individual flavors, although whatever they are are delicious. Great, lingering finish.

Another really good one. Aroma had some green veggies, soil and cantaloupe. Taste has some “dark” flavors, a bit puckery with earth and leather. The finish is ok with some heat and some mild bitterness. It lingers a while. ACRO052 abril 2021

ACR052. Something animally like wet wool, and curing leather. Clove cigarettes, over ripe pineapple, burnt sugar, roasted peanuts, and boiled green beans. The more I sipped this one the more the roasted peanuts came to the front. This one’s super interesting and I really like it.

It’s a cornucopia of fruits, vegetables and minerals. It’s sweet with a bit of chemical-like woodsy scent. Roasted asparagus, raw carrots, and bell peppers. “Tropical” fruit flavored gum, like fruit punch flavors. Watermelon, kiwi, and mango. A mild slightly soapy cilantro vibe. Sawdust and wood glue with some two-cycle fuel. The longer it sits, the more earthy scents come out and the sweeter fruits start to fade.

The fruit has nearly entirely dissipated on the palate with woods and vegetables coming out. I get more dried and roasted chili peppers. The earthy notes are very present and welcomed. It’s a bit like washing dirt off mushrooms. Some burnt ends savory notes also come out. One odd note to point out is a slight floral perfume.

On the finish it becomes slightly astringent and on the dry side. The artificial fruit flavors are back along with more wood notes. It’s a bit of a wood shop – oils, glue and sawdust again. Paste wax even. Possibly even oil paints. The finish just seems like a dry champagne. From start to finish that fruity sweetness evolves into a more woodsy dry flavor. It’s simply wonderful.

Initially it was a very chemical grassy nose. I let it sit and that chemical note faded a bit into the background. Earthy aromas – potatoes, carrots, fennel and green onions. Mild rice wine vinegar note. Medicinal, artificial cherry cough syrup. Heavy mineral and metallic. Aluminum. Canned Orange Juice. A slight hint of mint and a light fruity note.

Lots of punchy capsaicin heat on the palate. Black tea, touch of lemon and some cinnamon. Basically describing a hot toddy. Fruit extract, agave nectar sweetness. Very enjoyable but not really something that challenges you. Very straight forward roasted agave flavors.

The finish reminds me of a dry riesling. Tropical fruit and herbaceous. Mint, lime, citrus oil, roasted agave. The grassy flavors bring the dried tea and tobacco notes. Sweet agave nectar and grape or raisin fruity flavors. Finish is a bit on the short side but very good.

I really do enjoy this one but it’s not something that you have to inspect much. You can just sit back and enjoy without much thought. It’s a well made spirit without many negative qualities. Upon reveal, I should note my previous review of this expression was distilled by his grandfather, Ángel Cruz Calvo. Still some similarities between my notes especially the wine flavors.

Lote: ACR013
Sweet & tangy smell. Reminiscent of other Cuentacuentos bottles. Very fragrant and I love that.
Taste is more subdued – green veggies, but soft and has a watery viscosity to it that makes it appear to be a lower ABV. Closer to a 3.75.
Review #2: Batch ACR052
Great smell with some sweet greeness to it. Very inviting. Taste at first seemed a bit hotter than I’d prefer, but mellowed out nicely. Tropical fruit, with some banana notes and leather. Well rounded, and this batch might be closer to 4 star than the previous one I tried.

Pickles and green beans. Ginger rock candy? Perfume? Enjoyable but caught me off guard. Will have to revisit. Drinks like an 80-proofer

Lot ACR052 Bottle 727 (April 2021)
Nose – Rock candy. Funky clay. Fish sauce.

Palate – Apple pie (slightly charred, buttery crust) baked in an oak-wood forno oven (yes, oddly specific but I worked in the kitchen that made this exact delicious dessert). Clay. Maple cream. Sea salt. Savory, sweet & ashy finish.
Rating: 4.5 stars

June 2021
No batch info.
Nose – Apple slices. Vanilla extract. Not terribly smoky but a bit more vapory than most.

Palate -Apple pie with fresh farm cream. A quality, smoky-heavy finish with a long, lingering sweet cream aftertaste.

This is awesome! Batch ACB008. Bottle 112/125. Very green on nose. Fresh green apples! Smells amazing! Sweet vanilla and a bit of mint. The palate is creamy with yogurt, cream, and some orange and mango. Good fruit. Doesn’t taste like anything I’ve had from Sola de Vega tho. Not that typical slate taste/feel I was expecting. So this was a pleasant surprise.

Wow. Green and vegetal. The flavors are Uber fresh – organic farmer’s market fresh produce notes. Sweet tea on the finish. Not getting much clay which is interesting given it is from Sola de Vega. May 2018 batch.
