About this mezcal
Del Maguey Las Milpas is produced by Anastacio Cruz Antonio and his sons Rigoberto, Abel and Pedro in the remote village of Las Milpas. The village is located high above San Dionisio Ocotopec in Oaxaca. The palenque is nestled among the cornfields and overlooks rolling pastures. Agave Espadin is roasted in an underground oven carved into a granite hillside. It is milled using a horse-drawn tahona, naturally fermented in open-air wooden fermentation vats, and twice distilled in small copper stills. Las Milpas has aromas of slate and minerals. On the palate there are notes of tropical fruit, citrus, lavender, and tarragon with a long and dry finish.
Del Maguey Mezcal
Del Maguey (pronounced ma–gay), Single Village Mezcal was founded in 1995 by internationally renowned artist and Mezcal visionary, Ron Cooper. Ron introduced the world to previously unavailable 100% certified organic, artisanal Mezcal produced the original handcrafted way. Through deep cultural relationships with Zapotec Mexican Indian producers in the remote villages of Oaxaca, Mexico, Del Maguey harnesses ancient, original organic processes. Combining these methods with varying micro-climates and terroir gives each creation its own unique, rich, sweet and smoky character. Every product in their collection is made by individual family palenqueros (producers) in old-style villages. They are the first producer to credit each product after the village where our liquid is made. When you see their beautiful green bottles you know it’s Del Maguey. Most of Del Maguey’s mezcals are distilled to proof, so the ABV will vary slightly between batches.
In June of 2017, international spirits company, Pernod Ricard, purchased majority stake in the company. Del Maguey is now part of their portfolio that includes Jameson Whiskey, Absolute Vodka, and Havana Club Rum.

Lot SDO – 191
Initial nasal impact is warming and drying.
Mineral, tropical fruit and wet slate hit first on the aroma. Honeysuckle and sage follow.
Mouthfeel is oily with sufficient alcohol.
Flavor leads with guava, papaya, pine, limestone, honey, lavender and a nice ash presence is well balanced throughout every sip.
Finish is long and very drying with the guava and ash lingering nicely.

Nose if a sweet fruit like a very well ripened banana, smoke and some ethanol heat
Taste is lightly fruity and lemon zest. Smoke is clearly present but not offensive and had a dry finish.
Lot SDC-201 46% Aromas out of the Bottle remind me of Cedar oak and smoke. Flavor is clean smoke very scotch like with a touch of green grass. I feel this Is is one of the more smokey del magay versions
caramel popcorn, roasted over slate and ash. blossoms into tropical fruit and citrus with essences of rose petal and lavender. followed by a savory onion and meat chew with a long, dry finish.

Round with agave sweetness, citrus, lavender, and minerals. Beautiful finish, delicious
Light chalk and lemon zest. Faint lactic notes on the dry finish. I enjoyed this and want to try it again. I’m not a big fan of the price which is $75/bottle. Batch SDO-191.
