About this destilado de agave

El Destilado Sierra Negra is made by maestro mezcalero Alberto Martinez in Santa Catarina Albarradas, Oaxaca. The agave are cooked with encino wood, mashed by hand with axes and mallets, fermented in cement tanks with Tepehuaje bark, and double distilled tiny clay pot stills.

El Destilado

While some of the El Destilado brand’s agave distillates are sourced from some of the same producers as the 5 Sentidos brand, the El Destilado spirits brand is otherwise not directly related to the El Destilado restaurant in Oaxaca City. The brand was founded by Michael Sager and Marcis Dzelzainis, who own the Sager + Wilde Restaurant and Wine Bar in London.

Never, ever did I have an Americana this rounded, fruity and viscous. It smells a bit of wet granite rock, and Italian maraschino liqueur
Palate follows suit, apricot pits, just a grassy hint of tarragon, mint, leather, forest floor, blueberry, vanilla. Well rounded, long aftertaste, nice minerality and dryness that really sets it apart from the otherwise copper distilled ones I have had from the region, it really balances the sweetness. Otherwise, I think many of the Albarradas mezcales have a bit similar, rounded character with hints of stone fruits. A favourite region indeed.
If you are based in the Americas, check out 5 sentidos Sierra Negra from the same mezcalero.

Excellent.Funky. Prefer this batch even to the 2020/1 batch – and the 2020/1 is a 5 Star mezcal too.

Earth, dust, wet road on the nose with hints of fruit and citrus.
Leather, grapefruit, pepper, more dust, light mint also towards the finish
Very smooth, nice warmth but not hot, and a long finish.
03/16, 70 BTLs
