About this destilado de agave

Luneta Cuishe from Angelica Garcia Vazquez is produced in San Baltazar Chichicapam, Oaxaca. Maestra mezcalera Angelica Garcia Vazquez distills her spirits at the same palenque as her mother-in-law, Berta Vazquez. She roasts her agaves in an underground earthen oven with mesquite and oak, mills them with a tahona, ferments them in cypress wood vats, and distills them twice in small copper pot stills.

Luneta

Luneta bottles expressions that are made with a variety of wild and semi-cultivated agaves, in various states by different mezcaleros, each with distinct elaboration techniques yielding individual flavor profiles. Luneta believes that quality, not quantity, is what’s worth striving for. They value individuality, the beauty of imperfection that comes with hand made creations, and the people that bring unique perspectives to the world.

Dirty, watery, “wormy”. Getting the vibe of weird cheap Oaxaca mezcal fermented near a gas station. Zack nails it with musty. Some folks might dig this but it reminds me too much of ‘con gusano’ mezcals I’ve tried.. something about the flavor profile is similar.

For extra context (not that you asked).. I ordered the 5 mini-bottle tasting set in February 2022 and am finally sipping through these. Only now am I realizing they used 100ml bottles and fill them halfway! The label says 50ml to be fair but I wonder if all that air influenced the tiny pour. Really hoping all the samples aren’t “skunked” so to speak. I hope the other ones are better. Also the QR code on this mini-bottle didn’t work but I’m assuming it is the same release.

Sampling kit (50 mL) w/ ABV of 44.7%.
Nose – A heavy walnut note. Musty.

Palate – Violets. Black licorice twizzlers. Spearmint breathmint sweetness and heat. Aftertaste of peppermint mouthwash and charred oak. Only downside is it’s a bit thin. This is decent but I think a bit more ABV would help.
