Maguey Melate Madre Cuixe is produced by mezcalero Ageo Cortes, who is the son of famed producer Felipe Cortes in Mengoli de Morelos, Miahuatlan, Oaxaca.
About this destilado de agave
Maguey Melate Madre Cuixe from Ageo Cortes was first released as part of the Maguey Melate Signature Box. Ageo and his father, Felipe Cortes, are well known throughout Oaxaca and have been featured in some of the finest mezcalerias in Oaxaca City, like Mezcaloteca.
Maguey Melate
Maguey Melate was founded on two ideas: 1) Artisanal agave spirits are amazing and should be shared with the world, and 2) The faster-cheaper economy is a harmful force for people, the environment, and now agave spirits.
They believe if mezcal (and agave spirits) can be understood and appreciated at its full potential, people will show their preference for quality artisanal mezcal that is sustainably and fairly sourced. By raising consumer consciousness on the origins of mezcal and educating enthusiasts on matters of quality and character, informed people will be empowered to ensure the future of mezcal. To do this, they’re reaching a large audience with an impactful message: KEEP MEZCAL ARTISANAL!
Maguey Melate is perhaps most well-known for their Mezcalero of the Month Club, which delivers artisanal small-batch agave spirits directly to the doors of consumers in the US and Mexico. In addition to the monthly spirits, they offer exclusive content and interviews with producers. Single releases are also available in the Maguey Melate shop.

The light, sweet nose gives little notice of the complex and wonderfully warm flavors that embody this agave spirit. With the first taste, the flavors expand from rich smoke to wood and light cinnamon; finishing off with agave and grassy fruit notes.
An excellent Mezcal from the Maguey Signature Box.

Thin to medium mouth feel. Bright, savory, effervescent. Pepper, soy, a hint of menthol and mintiness. Fresh rainwater, crisp. Faint wintergreen.
Unique, diverse and complex, this bottling from Ageo reinforces his notoriety for producing top notch Mezcal.

40 reviewsThis was the pick of the bunch, from the July 2020 “Signature Box”. In fact it’s really the only one I’d call “drinkable” and for sure the only I wanted to go back and had another glass of. While the previous two were rather “tailsy” this 375ml of Madre Cuixe was well made, interesting and inviting flavors every step of the way. Nice finish as well.

21 reviewsBottle has a blue tint, but even after pouring mezcal looks like it maybe has a blue tint. Strong up front with slight sweetness and a burn which lingers. Hints of licorice come through. Haven’t tried other Madre Cuixe, but it feels like this representation feels like it let’s a unique flavor come through. Very good.

Nose: Earthy, Mesquite, Green Bell Peppers, Light Mango, Black Tea.
Palate: Medium oily mouthfeel. Mesquite, Earthy, black tea, minerals, mango, Green Peppers, Cumin, roasted agave.
Finish: Long, Warm and dry. Earthy/Clay, Bell Peppers, black peppercorn, Light Brine, Mesquite, roasted agave.
Rating: 6/10
The finish is what really sticks out on this. It lingers forever with a warm, peppery, salty, mesquite lead tingle that is very delightful. It leans more on the savory side of flavors which is good and has a nice depth and complexity.
