About this destilado

Maguey Melate Plum Ciruela from Jaime Moreles Aquino was produced at his “Yuu Baa, Tierra Caliente” palenque in Villa Hidalgo Yalala, Oaxaca. This spirit contains no agave whatsoever. So why is it on Mezcal Reviews? Maestro Jaime Morales also produces delicious agave spirits and this distilled plum is really interesting. The plums were harvested, but never cooked. Instead, the fruit was squeezed by hand and added to small clay fermentation pots. Once fermented, it was double distilled in a clay pot still.

Maguey Melate

Maguey Melate was founded on two ideas: 1) Artisanal agave spirits are amazing and should be shared with the world, and 2) The faster-cheaper economy is a harmful force for people, the environment, and now agave spirits.

They believe if mezcal (and agave spirits) can be understood and appreciated at its full potential, people will show their preference for quality artisanal mezcal that is sustainably and fairly sourced. By raising consumer consciousness on the origins of mezcal and educating enthusiasts on matters of quality and character, informed people will be empowered to ensure the future of mezcal. To do this, they’re reaching a large audience with an impactful message: KEEP MEZCAL ARTISANAL!

Maguey Melate is perhaps most well-known for their Mezcalero of the Month Club, which delivers artisanal small-batch agave spirits directly to the doors of consumers in the US and Mexico. In addition to the monthly spirits, they offer exclusive content and interviews with producers. Single releases are also available in the Maguey Melate shop.

Batch: JAI-PLU-002 Bottle: 117
Nose – Prunes. Semi-sweet dark chocolate. Cheesecake. A pleasant nose.

Palate – Very greasy. An olive oil note. Jarred olive brine. It’s got a funkiness to that is a bit off putting (and I usually love funky mezcals). Finish is hot and a bit harsh for 45% ABV. This was interesting to try but I won’t be reaching for this bottle too often.

Nose: Cream Cheese, Olive Oil, Slight chlorine, Minerality,

Palate: Medium oily mouthfeel. Strong Olive Oil, Minerality, Brine, Cream Cheese, Pool Water,

Finish: Shorter finish. Pop of chlorine, Olive Oil, Minerality, Brine

On the weird side, but overally very good. It reminds me of sitting next to a pool that has just been bodied by a bunch of chlorine but in a good way. Super funky but with good flavors that keep me coming back.

?- clear
?- drying impact, slightly prickling.
Aromas of plum blossom, apricot, peach, nectarine, hay, mint, barnyard, savory plum pit.
Adequate & semi-complex production.
Average length and ordinary character.
?- coating, astringent and warming effect; sufficient smooth to rough alcohol; medium body.
Primarily sweet & sour taste, with bitter highlights; buttery smoothness.
Flavors of tamarind, hay, barnyard, savory, truffle, pepper, smoked pepper, light clay.
Medium concentration flavor intensity, slight complex character, harmonious balance.
Straightforward and long finish.
Very Good overall impression.

*has a few rough edges, mostly in the alcohol sense, also lacks length, and more plum character on the palate. However, it’s pleasant. It is way more rustic than any plum eau de vie or brandy from Europe. That is not against it. But the lack of plum character in comparison is.
