Mezcal Meteoro

Mezcal Meteoro is named after the legend of a mezcalero who used a meteor-crater as an oven (horno) for cooking his agave, which created the best mezcal.

About this mezcal

Mezcal Meteoro is made with 100% agave Espadin. It’s made by maestro mezcalero Petronilo Rosario Altamirano in Las Margaritas, Oaxaca. It’s a bold Espadin that has some bright fruity notes and a bit of smoke. It seems as though Meteoro is marketed mostly as mixer, and it’s very good for that purpose.

Meteoro Mezcal

Mezcal Meteoro fell from the sky in February 2012. It’s made using traditional Oaxacan production methods. Their marketing is spectacular and their Instagram feed is worth following for entertainment sake. They’ve done well to market themselves as a unique mezcal and their product is good.

It’s a good, decent Espadín… Smokey, light bodied. A great cocktail Mezcal. $45 in Northern Canada
I’m okay for the price. Prefer Sombra y Montelobos, personally.

Bought this cold at a Specks along I-35 near San Antonio. The label had the right stuff, the bottle looks like it is sourced in Mexico, the plastic stopper has “CAYO DEL CIELO” as a reverse relief print on top. Rubbed a little ink on it and you have a cool ink stamp with a saying that is fitting for this Mezcal. Very cool!
Really surprised how good it was for about $38. I like a good thick mouth-feel and this one is nice and tastes like Oaxaca.

Lote PCF04-1501. Botella 09752/10500. 45% ABV.

Finishing the last of bottle 09752 — recently rediscovered after it was abandoned in a rarely-used cupboard above our refrigerator. The aroma is a bit off, like citrus fruit fermenting in an old leather pouch. The palate is sweet and savoury, tasting of brown sugar and dried apricots. It reminds me of a buttery mexicano as it is now. Although a bit funky, this juice from Petronilo is tasty and still has bite.

Batch: PCF09-1801 (Bottle: 1,917/10,000)
Nose: Agave sugar pop! Tall grass. A saltiness like smelling your skin after being in the ocean.

Palate: Big time citrusy sugar the whole way through. Add to that: slight creaminess. A white pepper and leathery heat. Balanced smoke. Super solid espadin!

Thin to medium mouth feel. Sweet cream, confectioners sugar, honey and lemon. Toasty agave note. Some minerality. Heat in check.

Strong showing from an excellent budget option in the landscape. While not exceptional, this works in damn near everything, including in far too large a glass on my patio to enjoy the breeze. Yum.

Mild smell, balanced on the tongue with a peppery taste. Slightly harsh aftertaste.

Reminds me of del maguey vida, with a little more smoke. Pretty well balanced, almost no bite on the back end. Could down a bottle of this like water

This is a great espadin that you don’t see very often. The flavor profile is right down the middle: smoke, vanilla, burnt sugar, and lemon. Just the right amount of kick at 45% ABV. It’s made for cocktails but is a good sipper. Four stars considering the price. Batch PCF03-1401

This is a good Espadin. Meteoro is the same NOM as Marca Negra mezcal, so it’s definitely in good company. It’s interesting that this is marketed so heavily as a mixer as it’s 45% ABV. I’ve never had it in a cocktail, and I’m sure it would be fine for that purpose, but it also makes for a good sipper. Very soft and balanced. Lot: PCF03-1401.
