About this destilado de agave

Mezcalosfera Coyote (Agave iyoba) is made by Margarito Cortés in Miahuatlan, Oaxaca. The maguey Coyote in this mezcal is cooked with mezquite and encino, milled by hand with mallets, and double distilled in a copper refrescadera still. Agave coyote most commonly refers to an Agave americana, but in this case, Coyote is referring to Agave iyoba. The first batch of this imported into the US in 2019 was just 52 liters; however, it wasn’t released until 2021 as an Old Town Tequila exclusive.

Mezcalosfera de Mezcaloteca

Mezcalosfera de Mezcaloteca is the exported bottling from Mezcaloteca, the famous bar in Oaxaca City that is renowned for their educational tastings. They source all of their agave spirits directly from producers in seldom-traveled parts of Oaxaca that are often hard to get to. They put an exceptional amount of information on their labels, and all of their releases are very small batches that exhibit the most unique characteristics of mezcal. Though only a few batches have been brought into the US, there are dozens upon dozens of different varieties available for sale at their tasting room in Oaxaca City. Most of their spirits are labeled “Aguardiente de Agave”, however all of their limited exports are certified “Mezcal”. These mezcals are imported into the United States by Heavy Metl Premium Imports, which also imports popular brands Mezcal Real Minero and Rey Campero Mezcal.

Batch from Old Town Tequila. This has a big nose and flavors of Bazoka Joe bubble gum. I get molasses cookies as well. Coyote from Miahuatlán is always a treat.

Private batch for Old Town Tequila, just 52 liters. Aromas of Fruit Roll Ups, sea salt, fabric softener, and fresh flowers on a spring day. The palate is delicate. Notes of cough syrup, watermelon, freshly cracked black pepper, and molasses. Spearmint and menthol on the finish. I tasted this way back in 2019 at a Las Perlas Mezcal Collective and I remember absolutely loving it. Now, tasting the same batch over a year later, and this still kicks. I’m into it.

Sipped this back in 2019 at a Mezcal Collective at Las Perlas in Austin featuring Mezcalosfera with Silvia. It was my favorite of that 5 bottle tasting. Now that I’m tasting it again in 2021 my opinion remains positive. It reminds me of a really good Espadin or Arroqueño. Strong agave sugar, copper, a touch of salt, and black lime. It’s a bit “down the middle” flavor-wise but the flavors are really good. Don Margarito makes great mezcals and this is another one of them. 52 liter batch.
