About this mezcal

Mezcalosfera Espadin con Cafe is made by mezcalero Margarito Cortes (who also produced an Espadin con Cacao mezcal). Margarito comes from a family that has been producing traditional mezcal for many generations. He works closely with all of the agave that he uses for his mezcal, and he is known for experimenting with the addition of different ingredients in an extra third distillation, similar to a Pechuga. The agaves were roasted with mezquite and encino wood. It was fermented for eight days, distilled in a copper refrescadera still, and adjusted with puntas and shishe. This bottling was a total of 300 litres made in August 2017.

Mezcalosfera de Mezcaloteca

Mezcalosfera de Mezcaloteca is the exported bottling from Mezcaloteca, the famous bar in Oaxaca City that is renowned for their educational tastings. They source all of their agave spirits directly from producers in seldom-traveled parts of Oaxaca that are often hard to get to. They put an exceptional amount of information on their labels, and all of their releases are very small batches that exhibit the most unique characteristics of mezcal. Though only a few batches have been brought into the US, there are dozens upon dozens of different varieties available for sale at their tasting room in Oaxaca City.

Lot 08-17, distilled November 2017. A lot of flavours, but very difficult to define. In a blind tasting I noted a strong bitter (but not unpleasant) dark chocolate note, which I attribute to the coffee ingredient. It’s a rather harsh spirit, but it’s very tasty. I like it!
