About this mezcal

Morro Mezcal is produced by Juan Lopez Olivera using 100% estate grown agave Espadín in El Gramal, Oaxaca. The town of El Gramal backs up against the southern Sierra Madre Mountains in the Nejapa de Madero region. All of the agaves used in Morro Mezcal are grown in mountainside fields just behind the palenque. The local agave caretakers wait until the plants are in their seventh year before harvesting is considered; only select agaves which appear to be ready for production are harvested.

After being cooked in earthen mesquite ovens, it is fermented naturally in open air wooden vessels with local mountain spring water. The next step is distilling twice in small copper pot stills. This mezcal is distilled to proof meaning water is not added to bring it to the desired ABV. In this process, the puntas from the first distillation are blended with the heart of the second distillation to achieve 45% ABV. Morro Mezcal has a rich mouth feel and distinctively long finish with notes of burnt caramel.

Morro Mezcal is produced by Juan Lopez Olivera. All of the agaves used in Morro Mezcal are estate grown behind the palenque. It is the only palenque in El Gramal, Oaxaca. Morro Mezcal is also the only label exporting out of the palenque. Their agave Espadin joven appeared in early 2019 and was first released in California.

The name of the brand, “Morro”, was inspired by the brand founder’s Mexican great-grandfather’s land in Baja, called “Morro Hermoso.” Morro is an old word and has many meanings in Spanish but in this case it meant bluff or headland. The bottle label is sourced from his handwriting on a blueprint of his land he drew up in 1927.

Nose – Fresh lime. Lingering sharp white cheddar.

Palate – Medium-plus viscosity. Lime Life Saver candy. A tiny kerosene note in the back of the mouth – it’s not unpleasant though. A little cooked, crisped cheddar like the bits left in a frying pan after making a grilled cheese. Martini olive salinity. Medium, clean smoke throughout. This is about a 4.25 star mezcal although I rounded down as it’s a tad pricey ($65-70). Still… a damn good Espadin!

Enjoyable espadin mezcal. I get a bit of Parmesan cheese rind at first sip. It is light and approachable even at 45% alc/vol. There are some notes of blackberries and burnt sugarcane. Very organic and different than your standard espadin. Lot 0918A.

Solid lil Espadin. Thanks to Agave Fairy for the dram! Some clove, coriander, and molasses. Wisp of smoke throughout. Reminds me of a poor mans DM Chichicapa.

Lot 0918A. Smells rich and full. Aromas of sour apples, white onions, raspberries, and scallions. The palate is much lighter than the nose and tastes like peanuts through the whole experience. Notes of roasted peanuts, salt, and root vegetables. Very earthy.
