About this destilado de agave

5 Sentidos Pichomel was produced by Mezcalero Atelo Ramirez and his wife, Laura Arriaga. Atelo and Laura use a makeshift still fashioned from a galvanzed steel barrel, a clay cazuela hat, and a copper coil housed in another barrel. This Pichomel was an extremely limited release of this Agave marmorata found in the state of Puebla.

Nose is aged cheese and green pepper skin. Taste is the same with pimento olive brine and mint leaf with a clay finish. Medium-full bodied. Very full flavored for 94 proof. 4 stars

A 1.5 ounce sample from a Tahona Mercado Cinco Sentidos tasting. Nose has spearmint and popcorn. Great flavors on the palate: whipped cream, strawberry, minerality, herbaceousness, earthiness, and green beans. Superb stuff, need to get a whole bottle!

Definitely get notes similar to Maguey Tepeztate. Soft charred red peppers, graham crackers, and sugar cookies. Very enjoyable but not necessarily super exciting. Batch PCH05-20.

I was poured this as a blind without any context. It smelled quite nice and I expected something from it, but then slipped it past the lips and was all together let down. Didn’t at all carry any of the aroma that the nose lead me to believe it to be. Tried it again and noticed some defects in the distillation perhaps, I was sorting in my brain why I was poured this at all, it tasted like a weak/unorganized effort.

Finding out it was Agave marmorata I was even more confused, not really a hint of that…one of my favorite agaves. Would have guessed it to be 42% ABV.

Then I was shown the bottle and scratched my head one last time. I have heard a few good things about the liquids from the brand 5 Sentidos, never have had any…and saw it was a private pick from an online group. I am curious why, as all together I’d not find anything special about this bottle.

Nose – Cherry. Custard. Nutmeg.

Palate – Booming, sweet and rich flavors to start. Banana pudding. Very dry finish with a fun dips candy note on the aftertaste. This was just a 1 oz pour but this seems so complex I’m going to need more for a better assessment.😎

Batch PCH05-20, 168 bottles, 45.01%ABV. Wow! What a fruit bomb, especially ripe bananas and cantaloupe. So different from the agave Marmorata spirits that come out of Oaxaca. No chili peppers here! Finishes with some subtle earthy leather undertones. You can almost taste the labor of love that went into making this. This small batch gem from Puebla should be sought out and given a try

Nose : powerful and savory with butter, bell peppers, chillies, bananas and something lactic at the tail end.
Taste : Wow! Complex and powerful. Although I taste tepeztate, this is a different beast. Salty, cheesecake, dirty and vegetal.
Finish : tingly on the tongue, bbq smoke and butter.
Quite a roller-coaster ride. This is on steroids..
