5 Sentidos Tobaziche from Tio Pedro was produced in the beautiful community of Santa Catarina Minas, Oaxaca.
About this destilado de agave
5 Sentidos Tobaziche from Tio Pedro was released as one of three special editions for Chicago’s West Lakeview Liquors. This ancestral spirit was distilled by Tio Pedro Hernandez Arellanes in Santa Catarina Minas, Oaxaca. Tio Pedro hand-mashed approximately 30 cooked Tobaziche hearts with a wooden mallet, before fermenting them with naturally occurring yeasts in a pine vat. The agave was then double distilled in small clay pots.
5 Sentidos
5 Sentidos is named after the five senses that their mezcaleros use to produce their agave spirits. The producers of this mezcal do not use any model machinery or tools, being guided only by their senses throughout the production process. The brand was launched by El Destilado restaurant in centro Oaxaca. The restaurant is known for it's creative menu, unique cocktails, and exception agave spirits. The brand is a curated tour of Mexico with a wide range of expressions that are made by some of the best mezcaleros in the region. Cinco Sentidos is uncertified mezcal and is labeled as "Destilado de Agave".
A note about the bottle shape: The short round bottles are the US release bottles. In other areas of distribution (e.g. Mexico, Canada, Japan) the bottles are the taller Bordelaise shape.

This is a rich and delicious Destilado de Agave. It veers towards overly sweet with these strong fruit notes, but is saved by some nice minerality, slight vegetalness, and the earthiness. Well balanced, very complex, this is quite a delight to drink. As I sit here sipping on my sample I wish I had more than 2 ounces of it to drink. This is quite the outstanding agave spirit.

This mezcal is incredibly aromatic. The nose evokes blueberries muffin, cornflakes, bubblegum, and lilac; it’s sweet, heady, and an absolute delight to the senses. When you drill down into it, a lactic influence and vibrant minerality become more obvious. When drank, it’s thick and luscious–that heady aroma definitely converts into a perfumed palate that fills the mouth. Blueberries, cereal, dried flowers, and bubble gum yet again. The profile flirts with being cloying, but some zippy minerality helps elevate it into something intoxicating.
This mezcal really coats the tongue and sticks the landing with a long, lingering finish that carries the notes of lilac and blueberry. This is not an energetic and fresh mezcal. It’s indulgent, complex, and dessert-esque. Its aromas will fill the room, and the spirit itself easily lives up to the bouquet it projects.
