Chacolo Brocha – Ixtero Amarillo

Chacolo Brocha - Ixtero Amarillo follows the centuries-old production practices that once dominated the Jalisco countryside.

About this destilado de agave

Chacolo Brocha – Ixtero Amarillo is a destilado de agave from Zapotitlan de Vadillo, Jalisco. The maguey Brocha is an agave Angustifolia, sub-varietal related to Espadin, and the maguey Ixtero Amarillo is an agave Rhodacantha, sub-varietal related to Mexicano. The agave are cooked in an underground oven and milled by hand with axes. Once cooked and milled, the agave are fermented naturally in wooden tinas with mountain spring water. Finally, they are double distilled in a Filipino style still.

Chacolo

The Partida family, lead by Don Macario, has been making their iconic “mezcales” for 5 generations in Zapotitlan de Vadillo, Jalisco, however due to legalities they can neither call their product mezcal nor tequila. They are renowned among mezcaleros and mezcal aficionados for the amazing spirits that are meticulously made from the 15 different agave varietals that they have been collecting from their region for three generations. These varietals include 14 A. angustifolia sub varietals and 1 A. rhodacantha sub-varietal.

48.33% abv, lote 4, volume 1C

Review #113: the nose has vanilla, chlorine, cream, and mint.
The palate has green banana, lime, pineapple, cream, chlorine, pine, mint, green grass, honey, and the finish has lingering dry spicy wood, cinnamon, and herbal medicine.

This was fun to side by side with the Ixtero and Brocha. You can definitely pick out the more creamy sweetness from the Brocha and the more herbal and citrusy Ixtero. Unfortunately I find it to have the lesser qualities of each. The delicate notes from the Brocha somehow dominate the Ixtero on the nose along with its chemical off note. And the brashness of the Ixtero isn’t softened on the finish at all by the Brocha. It has a lot going for it from what I tried with the seperate agaves but it feels like a bit of a miss.

Chacolo Ixtero Amarillo/Brocha 47.4% Sep. 2016 batch

Nose: Smells like fluoride and mint. Big dentist office vibes. Not appealing. Some baker’s chocolate emerges with air time.

Palate: Not as much of that fluoride mint up front, but then chemicals and burnt brussel sprouts emerge towards the finish. Dank vegetation.

Finish: That fluoride mint note remains.

Overall: I did not like this at all. There’s some complexity, but I did not enjoy the notes and I struggled to finish this.

Nose – Smoky peaches and cream. Mosquito repellent.

Palate – Sweet, creamy, grassy, and black licorice all in one hit. Vanilla, eucalyptus and pine smoke in the finish and a long aftertaste.

Volume 1, Lote 2, September 2016. Its acidic profile is exciting! Sweetness vacillates between orange and crème sodas. Some baking spices are sprinkled throughout, and flavors are complex start to finish. I love the aromas remaining in an empty glass.
Special harvest too. The Brocha matured 3 years post Capon, and the Amarillo 4 years after removing the sprouting quiote.

Lot 2 from Sept 2016. Bottle 253/1466. Smells piney with hints of vanilla, spearmint, and menthol. Palate is balanced and full. Hints cinnamon and Christmas (candy canes, mistletoe, etc…). Some mint on the palate as well, mostly spearmint and a bit of menthol.

Very interesting! Like a blend of mezcal and raicilla with a tequila finish. Flavors of blueberries and whipped cream. The finish is a spiced holiday pie. September 2016 – Lot 2.

Volume 1.
Lots of smoke, dark, with a body of roasted nuts and singed herbs. A little bit of that Jalisco funk / cheese, a little creamy orange. Ok entry, then it’s a little acrid and hot with more earthy gin references (think Boodles). Decent finish.

Had Chacolo twice before (once in the Wahaka VdM series and the other being a bottle procured from Mis Mezcales in CDMX)…. not this Ensamble though. Sweet corn on the nose, some fresh cut grass and limestone up front, followed by smoke and apricots. Delicious
