About this mezcal

Del Maguey San Dionisio Ocotepec is made with agave Espadin and agave Tepeztate on a ranch high above San Dionisio Ocotepec, Oaxaca, in the small village of Las Milpas. Mezcalero Anastacio Cruz Antonio roasted the agave Espadin and Tepeztate together in an earthen oven that is lined with solid granite. The roasted agave was then milled separately by horse drawn tahona, and fermented separately with open-air yeasts. These agaves were then then double distilled separately in a 150 liter copper alembic still, before being blended post-distillation.

Expressions, like this one, in the Del Maguey del Campo Series are one-of-a-kind productions celebrating the time-honored practices of the palenqueros and agaveros. Every small batch is a unique field blend with a composition dictated by which locally available maguey are at the peak of maturity.

Del Maguey Mezcal

Del Maguey (pronounced ma–gay), Single Village Mezcal was founded in 1995 by internationally renowned artist and Mezcal visionary, Ron Cooper. Ron introduced the world to previously unavailable 100% certified organic, artisanal Mezcal produced the original handcrafted way. Through deep cultural relationships with Zapotec Mexican Indian producers in the remote villages of Oaxaca, Mexico, Del Maguey harnesses ancient, original organic processes. Combining these methods with varying micro-climates and terroir gives each creation its own unique, rich, sweet and smoky character. Every product in their collection is made by individual family palenqueros (producers) in old-style villages. They are the first producer to credit each product after the village where our liquid is made. When you see their beautiful green bottles you know it’s Del Maguey. Most of Del Maguey’s mezcals are distilled to proof, so the ABV will vary slightly between batches.

In June of 2017, international spirits company, Pernod Ricard, purchased majority stake in the company. Del Maguey is now part of their portfolio that includes Jameson Whiskey, Absolute Vodka, and Havana Club Rum.

Lot SDO-171 46% Sampled on 12-12-2023. Aroma’s out of the bottle are peppers cheese aftershave brown overripe fruit fishey briney. Flavors are spicy lemons salty fish. After airing out some I think it is getting better. Nice fruit flavors and aromas.

Medium mouth feel. Immediately hit with clay, bubble gum, faint cotton candy and then come confectioners sugar. Burnt sugar, pine, some pepper take over.

Diverse, unique and fun. Count me in.

This is a special bottle made for The Austin Shaker/ Half Step/ Las Perals and as said, very reasonably priced. The espadin and tepeztate are harmonious in this bottle. It has acidic components. I get a lot of fresh lemon rinds.

Lot SDO-171. Aromas of cooked asparagus, green olives, dry tobacco, and freshly chopped mint. Light palate with some legs. More floral in flavor while the nose was mostly vegetative. Palate has subtle notes of pine needles, hay, sage, old hemp, a bit of bog, and freshly tanned leather. For the price, this is a steal.

A great bottle for the price. Given the unique distribution of this release and the archaic booze laws in Texas – this retails for $40/bottle. While the amount of agave Tepeztate is unknown, it is there albeit in a supporting role. This mezcal is thick with flavors. There’s lots of lemon, melon, burnt honey, and cinnamon. The tasting notes on the bottle are spot on too. A punchy mezcal that shows off a bit of wild spice from the Tepeztate. It packs some heat at 46%. Lot SDO-171.
