About this mezcal

El Buho Especial Jabali is made with the wild maguey Jabali in Santiago Matatlan. This agave is tough to work with and many mezcaleros won’t touch it because it foams and expands during distillation, which can be dangerous for the stills. That danger, however, is accompanied by exceptional flavor and profile. This mezcal is only released in incredibly small batches. The agaves in Lot 2 were sourced in Santa Maria Zoquitlan, Oaxaca and the resulting mezcal was rested in stainless steel tanks for 8 months. Maguey Jabali is notoriously difficult to work with along with providing a low sugar content; this mezcal was distilled 4 times in order to get the right flavor and ABV.

El Buho Mezcal was founded by Jose Isaac “Pepe” Jimenez Mendez, who comes from a long line of mezcal producers, and TJ Steele, a Brooklyn-based chef. TJ and Pepe launched their mezcal brand with a mission to deliver a high-quality mezcal at an affordable price in an iconic bottle. El Buho Mezcal is a small batch mezcal that is made in the heart of Oaxaca.

very tasty sipper.the nose takes a minute to open up.very floral.lilac,honeysuckle and roses.the palate has the same floral character with vanilla,smoke and some sweet orange.similar profile to other jabalis but seems softer and with a delicate complexity.this does not reveal its 50 % abv.it take more than one sip to appreciate this gentle complex spirit.jabalis have a unique taste thats hard to describe.cost was around $100.00.very fine mezcal and bargain.

Just a taster at the Agave: Spirit of a Nation screening. Had a few different tastes, but remembered liking this better than the cuishe.

Tried this for the first time at Espita Mezcaleria in Washington DC. At that time with this mezcal, the flavors seemed a bit too restrained. There aren’t many agave Jabali mezcals on the market, but the ones out there are in-your-face. On subsequent tastings I’ve come to enjoy the incredibly elegant and refined flavors of this agave Jabali mezcal. There are yummy notes of mint, sweet potato, nutty custard, and tangerine candy with a hint of salt. This is delicious and approachable mezcal. Lot 01/JAB.

Lot 01/JAB. Awesome Jabali. Cotton candy and butterscotch on the nose. Slight sweet pepper aromas. The flavor is buttery with a bit of all spice. Flavor notes of caramel, butterscotch, and burnt orange peel. This Jabali is a bit less wild and extravagant than some other Jabali mezcals that I’ve tasted. This one is more controlled and succinct. It’s more mellow and less bipolar or manic.
