About this mezcal

El Buho Especial Ensamble is produced by Octavio Jiménez Monterroza in Santiago Matatlan, Oaxaca using wild agaves sourced in San Pablo Huixtepec, Oaxaca. This ensamble is crafted from four different maguey species in equal parts: Arroqueno, Coyote, Barril, and Cuishe. This is a traditional ensamble meaning all of the different agaves are produced together in the same batch. The agaves are crushed by a horse-drawn tahona, cooked for 7 days in a stone oven, and fermented for 7 days in pine vats. After distillation, it was rested in plastic for 7 months. This mezcal has notes of banana on the nose. The fruit is balanced out by a viscous mouthfeel along with intense flavors of pineapple, roasted agave, and vanilla. It finishes with dark caramel and pepper salt.

El Buho Mezcal

One ounce sample no batch number. Rainbow cupcake sprinkles, chocolate frosting, medjool dates, molasses, cream sherry, cinnamon, and powdered sugar. This is really nice but there is a slight rubbing alcohol harshness that keeps it from scoring higher.

If you would have blindfolded me, I would have maybe guessed a standard espadin with some karwinskii-type ensamble. Pinon, some soot, and a tad bit of honey. Not really scratching my itch. Ok

This mescal blew my top off! What Intensity, what fragrance, what flavor! Holy cow I could drink the whole bottle right now!! Fruity, salted Carmel, pineapple and cherries, cacao all mixed with hamburgers and extra sour pickles. Liquid smoke, horseradish, bacon bits and snickers candy bar all rolled up together.

Fruit and dark sugar. Roasted coffee and chocolate frosting. Interesting ensamble from El Buho. I cannot pick out the individual agaves but I get a strong Americana vibe and the Karwinskii takes a backseat. At 50% ABV it is well-balanced and has a long finish.

Strong and rich on the nose. Smells great. Aromas of vanilla, peppers, and tomatillos. Palate is a bit sharp but full of flavor. Notes of sweet potato, potato chips, and sour cream with a splash of crumbled bacon on top. This is a little hot. Might need to sit on the shelf for awhile.
