In 2009, Carlos resumed the family tradition and teamed up with 5th generation maestro mezcalero Pedro Hernandez to create Koch El Mezcal de Oaxaca, with the goal of preserving and promoting mezcal culture. After 10 years of business, they’ve now integrated more than 15 communities and 50 producing families into their collective. Each batch will vary, so check your bottle for details.

LOTE: MAD0101AR-01/18
Nose – Dried bay leaf. Tobacco leaf. Potpourri.

Palate – Pink candy popcorn! A flavor that was has been dormant since 1986 – but there it is (Lucky Elephant on the box). Orchid flower. Salted butter. A floral/perfumed smokiness. A dry, nutty aftertaste but a bitterness that reminds me of getting the inner, dried skin in a walnut (doing a quick internet search apparently that part is the “endocarp” – that’s right folks tune in for the mezcal reviews… stay for the nut anatomy trivia).

Very pleasant smell, some perfumey tonka and amber — or a hint of barnyard funk if you like.

Woody on the palate, not so much fruit, but elegant and balanced. This mezcal has a personality of elegance and subtle flavours of cedar, walnut, macadamia, cucumber and vague notes of lemon peel. The aftertaste follows suit, a bit short and maybe a bit tart but still very pleasant.
