La Medida Tobasiche

La Medida Tobasiche varies by release. Check your bottle for specific details.

About this mezcal

La Medida Tobasiche is made with maguey Tobasiche in Miahuatlan de Porfirio Diaz, Oaxaca. While each batch may vary, at least one batch was made by Jose Diaz Bustamante. Jose cooks his agave in an underground pit oven, crushes the cooked agave with a tahona, ferments with open air yeasts in wooden vats, and distills in a copper refrescadera. Other batches may be produced by other mezcaleros depending on where they are purchased.

La Medida Mezcal

Mezcales La Medida brings together more than 46 Oaxacan producers. Their mezcal is made in small palenques with over 450 years of tradition and culture. The brand is run by Julián Vidal Gómez Rodríguez, who began working with mezcal over 40 years ago. Throughout his career he has worked with brands like Monte Alban, Benevá, and Del Maguey. He focuses heavily on mezcal’s mysticism and the traditional production methods that have been used for hundreds of years. Some of their mezcal is certified, while other releases go by “aguardiente de agave.” Each batch is different. Check your bottles for details.

A bit lactic funk on the nose, dusty loft and the whiff of a bag of pecan nuts being opened.
This is my first tobaziche that has been distilled “con refrescador” and what an effect it gives. Lots of fruits, quetch plums, quince and baked agave, some nice minerality. There is also leather and bright tobacco, a bit of Brazil nuts. Well made! Reminds me a bit of Del Maguey’s Wild Tobaziche

ABV 50% Lot:TBS2201-22a

Picked this 200 ml bottle up at El Grifo in Condensa Mexico City March, 2022. Nose has a great sweetness, candy for days. Such great flavor on this one: candied tropical fruit, bread pudding, minerality, and floral tones. A very enjoyable peppery heat. The ABV holds its own and wish I had gotten a 750. Great juice!

Rich and roasty once more. Sweet pineapple, mango, pepper, faint brine, hint of clay. Powerful on the palate with some clay essence and a growing smoke character.

This is really great, showing La Medida has the staying power to maintain an already great track record. Powerful, complex, enticing, Its got it all.

Very fruit driven, sweet floral notes, some slightly stinky minerality hiding, maybe some vanilla. Plummy, tiny hits of mints, stems, slightly rotten pineapple. Explosive palate, but a bit hot and perhaps overly one-note floral on the finish.

Batch Number: MIA-TBS1803H
47.3% ABV

The nose on this mezcal is fairly subdued. There is some high-toned acidity and very bright, chalky minerality. A hint of dried corn husk, cooling spearmint, and tropical fruit hide underneath. On the palate, there is a burst of flavor. On occasion, the palate is dominated by lush tropical fruits and red berries. Today, the dried corn husk returns and evolves into earthy corn meal. The cooling spearmint gives way to eucalyptus and thyme. The fruit notes are playing nice in the background, and play nicely with the green notes on the finish. Ultimately, the earthiness outlasts all the other notes, and go on for quite some time.

This is my desert island bottle, at least for now. I first tried this mezcal at a La Medida tasting hosted at ATLA in NYC months ago. I was completely and utterly blown away by what I was tasting, and acquiring one of these EU-only releases became my top priority. Now that I have one in hand (albeit a different batch), I’ve come to appreciate how intense and constantly-evolving this mezcal is.
