About this mezcal

Montelobos Pechuga is made with agave Espadin. Before the third and final distillation, a turkey breast is suspended in the still and local fruits and spices are added to the distillate. Traditionally, a Pechuga mezcal like this is drunken at celebrations like weddings, quinceañeras, or other celebratory events.

Montelobos Mezcal

Montelobos has business ties to William Grant & Sons, the makers of scotch whisky. Iván Saldaña, who has a background in molecular plant biology, founded Montelobos Mezcal. Saldaña worked with two mezcal-producing families in Oaxaca and Puebla. The mezcal is popular inside Mexico and is also exported. Montelobos Mezcal is committed to sustainability and has pledged to never use wild agaves in their mezcal production.

In October 2019, Campari Group (Davide Campari-Milano SpA) purchased a controlling stake in Montelobos. The $35.7 million USD investment also included a majority stake in Ancho Reyes chili liqueur.

Really happy with this one for so many reasons!
orange juice, creamsicle, apple cider, cinnamon, vanilla, orange marmalade, pine nut, toasted macadamia, and maybe a bit of coconut. Definitely a dessert style, that i’ll be sharing at thanksgiving this year

But the most important thing about this bottle?
It is at the moment, and likely forever, the only kosher pechuga on the market. The fact that someone would go out of their way to source kosher turkey breast & get a certification is amazing. Bravo Montelobos!

I tasted this one in Cozumel and was pretty surprised that the flavors seemed just like the espadin. I couldn’t really detect that this was a pechuga at all, but maybe my palate wasn’t mature enough back then.

This one I really wanted to like, and while the aromas are interesting the flavors didn’t hold up.
On the nose I get strong apple cider, or golden apples with a touch of strawberry fruit by the foot sweetness. And while the palate is nice and warm with that nice pechuga body, I dont get a lot of complexity from it. Also it loses all its character in a really short amount of time. I probably poured this 10-12 minute ago and the smell is already gone.

A full pour on the terrace of Pitiona overlooking the skyline of Oaxaca City and Templo Santo Domingo de Guzmán.
Paired w/ my first Huitlacoche, Nopales sorbet and perhaps the best tortillas of my life.

PH7157. This is a really tasty Pechuga. Brown sugar, mole poblano, vanilla ice cream, pineapple, chocolate frosting, and toasted marshmallows.

Great pechuga !! Balanced smokiness, smoothness of pechuga, complex aftertaste. It is one of my favourites and i would like to have an open bottle of this one always available in my bar.
