About this mezcal

Tio Pesca Arroqueno is made with wild maguey Arroqueno (agave Americana) in the remote town of Sola de Vega, Oaxaca. The town of Sola de Vega is known for its clay pot distillation, and this clay-pot distilled mezcal is made by maestro mezcalero Fernando Mitra. The agave are cooked in an underground pit oven, crushed by hand with mallets, fermented in Sabina wood vats, and double distilled in clay.

Tío Pesca is a Santa Sabia Distillery project that brings an exclusive collection of ancestral palenques to the international market. They seek to preserve traditions and processing techniques that their ancestors have transmitted from generation to generation. Santa Sabia Distillery is also involved in Pescador de Suenos Mezcal, Aprendiz Mezcal, and Vecindad Tequila.

Very dynamic and moderately complex, overall, with sour and saline notes at the forefront. Nose includes orange, gentle smoke, sheltered ocean lagoon, dry resinous wood, and a warm sweetness. Palette is dominantly sour, but pleasantly so, and the orange has shifted toward grapefruit and lime. Salinity, slight clay, and slight sweetness offset and balance the sourness, while bay leaf and maybe coastal cypress join in to add some herbal complexity. Mouthfeel is sort of slippery, like water from an alkaline lake, which is sort of fun. Finish is fairly long and somewhat sweet, with the orange and wood notes returning. I noticed taste and smell changed significantly with each sip I took, so this is one to sit back and spend some time with.

Batch TPAR. From 2017. Bottle 120/253. Funky nose. A little sour. The palate is a little thin but still tasty. I’m not getting much clay on this, nor do I get the slate taste that I normally associate with Sola de Vega. Theres a bit of salinity. I tasted this alongside the Tio Pesca Coyote is this was my favorite of the two by far.
