Koch Mezcal

Carlos Moreno’s family has been linked to mezcal since the beginning of the 20th century. In 2009, Carlos resumed the family tradition and teamed up with 5th generation maestro mezcalero Pedro Hernandez to create Koch El Mezcal de Oaxaca, with the goal of preserving and promoting mezcal culture. After 10 years of business, they’ve now integrated more than 15 communities and 50 producing families into their collective. Each batch will vary, so check your bottle for details.

Lot 01/19 – in a tumbler glass.
Lemongrass and Mint on the nose, after leaving in the glass for 5 min, some leather notes.

This is a great sipper on a hot day, served at room temperature (30C). Sweet agave with delicate wood smoke. The mint flavour kicks in immediately and fades quickly leaving the sweet and wood smoke flavours lingering. At an ABV of 47% this is pleasantly balanced.

Lot: 01/19
Nose: A bit of an ethanol whiff to start then it settles down. A nice sweet, agave funk that follows.

Palate: Dried banana chips. Finish is long and the smoke is so-so, kind of cigarette-ish. Salted peanut and lingering smoke in the aftertaste. The same ethanol in the nose is present throughout and makes it a tad harsh.

This is a decent ensamble for $45 – but it’s just OK.
