Tio Pesca Arroqueno

Oct 1, 2020

Very dynamic and moderately complex, overall, with sour and saline notes at the forefront. Nose includes orange, gentle smoke, sheltered ocean lagoon, dry resinous wood, and a warm sweetness. Palette is dominantly sour, but pleasantly so, and the orange has shifted toward grapefruit and lime. Salinity, slight clay, and slight sweetness offset and balance the sourness, while bay leaf and maybe coastal cypress join in to add some herbal complexity. Mouthfeel is sort of slippery, like water from an alkaline lake, which is sort of fun. Finish is fairly long and somewhat sweet, with the orange and wood notes returning. I noticed taste and smell changed significantly with each sip I took, so this is one to sit back and spend some time with.

According to my star rating system, 1 star = couldn’t finish the bottle, and I poured mine out. It’s available seemingly everywhere and many cocktails recipes call for it specifically, but don’t let that popularity fool you. It’s far too metallic and sour for my taste, without any other redeeming qualities.

Smoke, white pepper, and some minerality on the medium strength nose. Some pleasant youthful spiritiness there too. Smoke leads on the palate, followed by a Sauvignon Blanc-like minerality and sourness accompanied by a hint of juniper leaf (not berry, more herbal). Finish is moderately long and pleasant but light, with the white wine note dominating. It’s good, nothing at all unpleasant about it to me, but not my favorite (I prefer to have big fat base notes, but this is fairly light overall).

This is a very good mezcal. I credit it with rescuing my mezcal journey from despair after too many false starts. That said, while I absolutely loved it when I first tasted it, I’ve since found some I like better.

Tasting notes: moderate smokiness throughout, with citrus/passion fruit/kiwi fruity acidity, and a low-key agave sweetness. Some slight minerality too. My bottle didn’t have any of the pungency or acetone notes that others have found.

Excellent mezcal on the cleaner and lighter end of the spectrum, but still complex and interesting. Citrus is well balanced with some warm agave sweetness to round out the palate.

Nose is lemon lime with gentle smokiness and essence of dried resinous wood. Body is moderately light, with some pleasing fireworks on the tongue reminiscent of rye whiskey. Arrival to the palate is dominated by lime and lemon peel, partially offset by the agave’s earthy/spicy sweetness. Gentle smokiness continues throughout while notes of white pepper, dried savory leaves and cloves rise later. Finish is limey sour at first, giving way to a long lingering return of the agave sweetness and, after many minutes, buttery caramel.

I have to agree with juanquillo, this is one of the best mezcals, actually the very best mezcal I have ever had. What sets it apart for me is the deep richness of flavor and the full mouthfeel. My tasting notes (combined with my wife’s): Dominant super smooth caramel wave (specifically cajeta) supported by a bit of honey as the base note. Pine sap and juniper play the middle of the chord. At the top there’s grapefruit and a lovely acacia-like perfume (something like how desert floral drier sheets would smell if they made such a thing) wafting over all. Top notch stuff!
